You've already got a great gun for deer/elk. If you've got a hankerin' to spend on a new gun, go for something else, like a great varmint gun, or a muzzleloader, or a neat shotgun, or a handgun. Maybe customize one you already have with a special stock or sights, hand grips.

Reinvent what you have.  Shoot it so much you know what it does with all of the different bullet weights and loads designed for quarry. Your '06 has them all.  Spend the money on optics, ammo and range time;

If you really want a new gun, get something versatile, something you can shoot real flat, or really heavy. I have owned both the 300wsm and the 7mm wsm. I sold them both and got .300win mag, 7mm mag. The short magnums dont have any advantages for me. They reduce the rifles mgazine capacity, they are more difficult to find and they are spendy. I never even looked at reloading for the short mags. I do reload for my 300 win mag. you can do anything with that gun

The choice also depends on if you handload.  When you compare heavy for caliber bullets, the 7mag really offers very little improvement over the 30-06 if you are talking about 175gr bullets in the 7mag and 180gr in the 30-06, maybe 75 to 100fps faster with the 7mag.  However, in factory rounds the 300win mag will run 200-225fps faster than the 30-06 with both factory loaded 180gr bullets.  If you just want a new gun, and you shoot factory loads,  then if your really trying for an INCREASE in gun for elk and deer, it's truly a no brainer in my opinion.  Go with the 300 win mag. Truthfully, your best off just sticking with what you got and maybe do some upgrade on it, make it lighter, or a better stock and trigger or something like that.

The Chrony could possibly be the worst invention to the contentment of any rifle or bow hunter.  To put these differences into perspective think about this.  My 65# recurve bow with heavy aluminum 2020 arrows will shoot faster than that difference mentioned in the 7mm to 06 reference.  Shoot carbon arrows out of it and it will shoot the difference mentioned between the 06 and the 300 WM.  Guys tend to get all wired up over a minimum percentage in velocity.  In reality there really isn't much difference.  Most importantly find something you know you are going to shoot well and practice.

Being a rifle looney I too have more rifles than I need. If you already have an 30-06 your good for elk as that cartridge probably is the #1 elk cartridge used . I would go with something lighter and unique for deer like a 257 rob or 6.5 creedmore or 6.5x55 swede.

There are numerous 7mm cartridges. So, like your original post, this post is lacking detail.

By the way... a 7MM STW is not a 7MM cartridge, it is derived from an 8MM belted cartridge and there were 4 choices to choose from during the wildcat phase.
Also, .280rem is not .284/7MM. the cartridge may be a 7MM case necked down but not .284

none of the ones I mentioned are true 7mm cartridges, they are all .284(7.2mm).   ;)

halfway down this page for the .280. the 7stw reads the same killbilly.  ;)
http://www.chuckhawks.com/280Rem.htm

If you want a true 7mm(.277) rig, your gonna have to get a .270 lol. just cuz a case isnt derived from the particular bullet diameter doesnt mean that the cartridge in question can't be designated by the bullet diameter. Thats like saying a 300winmag isnt a 30(.308) caliber cartridge because the casing is derived from a .375

Addicted, you're lucky they took away his moderating powers.  You'd be banned for an outburst like that.
