Chowder Ridge Goat Tag
« on: July 21, 2008, 05:27:36 PM »
A friend of mine drew the Chowder Ridge goat tag. Does anybody have any experience with the goats up there? He knows the area some, but I figured I would post on here to get some more knowledge for him. He is going to give this tag 100% effort and hold out for a big Billy!

Jon.  I lost your cell number.  Who the heck drew that tag???  Barry D.Z and Brian M.  know that area real well and spend a fair amount of time glassing the goats up there.  You should get in touch with them.  Give me a call when you get a minute.

I won't be healthy enough to hike around in goat country for a while, I'm dealing with a badly strained left quadriceps right now and need to take it easy for a few months. A goat hunt would be unreal, but at the same time very hard on the leg!

Bob filled his Chowder Ridge Goat tag Friday with a 9" Nanny. He packed in there Thursday afternoon and got camp set up. Headed up the ridge Friday morning and right away spotted what appeared to be a big goat. He watched the goat for a while and made sure it was alone and noticed it had a yellowish tinge to it, the horns looked impressive as well. All signs pointed towards 'big billy" (he said the one thing he didn't observe was how it urinated). He made a 3 hr stalk through some cliffs and shot the goat from above at a distance of 220 yds. The goat cartwheeled over a ledge and landed in creek busting off one horn entirely - which he actually found before he found the goat.
It just shows how tough goats can be to judge.

I don't know what they do different when they urinate. Bob talked as if that was one sure way to tell. I assumed he learned about that while studying about goats.
