Critique my beaver set
« on: January 21, 2012, 05:12:27 PM »
Reset a couple beaver cages today due to the high water. First pic is from a few weeks ago where I put the cage next to a castor mound. Nothing. Several times he visited the mound but avoided the cage with the back-breaker castor in it. Next pic is where I set it today. Tore apart his mound, put the cage where it was, put some of his mound in the back of the cage and added some castor from the bottle. Last years castor. Third pick is of a swim through right next to the other. What do you think?

3nails,
destoying his and putting it in the back of the trap is the way to go, the only thing i might change is move the trap back a foot or so so he can get on to dry land then walk into the cage, stepping from the water into the cage might move the trap and set it off. just my two cents!!! good luck!!! the swim through looks great!!!

I would have taken his entire mound and built it my the cage, plus had the trap back about 6"-12" farther. Thats just being picky, looks good. The swin through looks dynamite!
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Looking at it now I can see I need to move it back. I'll do that in the a.m. if I don't have him. Thanks for the tips. The mound was about as big as the trap. How many mounds do they generally have?

You will have much better luck with a hanncock and some fresh willow tie wired to the back of it

That is not true,,,,,, I have had more empty koro and hancock trap then anything else,,,

I like the cage to be in the water,,,,,,   The only thing I would have done is lean a small amount of debris onto the cage,,,,

Just got back. :bash: Goofy beaver was all around both traps but didn't go in. Maybe tonight!

 I'll do that, Dave.

  :hello: :chuckle: :chuckle:
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.
