Hog Hunting in Cali
« on: January 22, 2012, 02:27:10 PM »
Have any of you guys hunted pigs? My buddy wants me to come down and do some hog hunting. We were thinking of doing it around June in California. Is this a good time of year or does that matter? We will be getting a guide for two days of hunting.

I am use to hunting coyotes with my .223, is this a good round for hogs or should I use my .30 06?

Let me know if any of you have done this, what you liked about your trip and what you would have changed.

Thanks

I went hog hunting in Texas a couple of weeks ago when I went to visit my daughter.  http://www.texasthermalhoghunts.com/  Never even saw a hog but it was still fun and I plan to try it agian.  This is what the guide told me.  They neck shoot them with a 308 using a varmint bullet.  He personally uses his 223 with a harder bullet.  A Vmax in a 223 will go splat.  A FMJ will pass thru and the hog runs off.  I bought a 270 that I plan to leave in Texas at my daughters for future hunts.  This was all night hunting.  Can you night hunt in Calif?

I've hog hunted in Northern California quite a bit.  What part of the state are you looking into?  I can point you to a couple good guides.  Pricing ranges from 200 to 500 day.  Generally your guide will guaranteed a shot.  Most will take your pig to the butcher (the meat is a delicacy). It can be hard work unlike the bait & wait stuff you see in Texas on TV.

I think the best time for boar hunting in from mid autumn to spring.  Especially when the acorns drop.  Some friends think the best time is winter.  I've found it tough to find hogs in the summer.  They seem to be not real active during this time.

Use the 30-06 165 or 180 grain.  That and the 308 are the best hog guns.  You may be shooting a pretty good distance and hogs are tough and can get big.  If you are hunting with dogs bring a 357 or bigger.  Use hard cast lead or heavy FMJ for the handgun (no hollow points).

This will be in Northern California. Please let know about what guides you have used. My buddy has been out with one a few times but we are open to anything.

Ive shot pigs in cali on a ranch, just through people we knew, but it was a blast, chased them down on quads! I used a 7mm mag, but I use it for everything, a 223 would work if you can shoot good. Kid we went with used a 44 mag and headshot them up close

I have hunted pigs in Northern California and done pretty good. The best part is day time ground squirrel hunting with a .22.  Mostly around the Monterrey area and Fort Hunter Ligget. I have also hunted pigs in South West Texas, that was pretty fun but tough as I went in the summer time and had to hunt them at night. I have also hunted pigs in Eastern Oregon. There is surprisingly quite a bit of pigs over there.

When I hunt pigs, I do it typically close and personal. I use my M-4 with just an aimpoint. However, I do carry a .308 scoped in case I see some at a distance I cannot close.
