What Species deer was your first kill in WASH.

Mine was a 4x "basket-rack" palouse whitetail. I grew up in Southern Idaho and with minimal travels, had never really even seen a whitetail. Shot a few more and now I am back to hunting mulies on public land......feels good.

Not surprising that Blacktails are running away with this.  Far more people live west of the cascades than east. Most people like to hunt close to home, unless they are on a trophy hunt.

Forgot to post that I took my first with my dad's old 25-35. In fact shot my first two deer with that gun. Wish it was still in the family for my son to use.  A friend of dad's found it buried in dirt and gravel at a gravel pit and it was in sad shape. Dad traded him something for it and brought it home and cleaned it up and refinished the stock. Sweet old gun.

once again sitka I disagree with you... I hunt close to home and far away from it. The only animals I consider to be trophys are the ones  I had to work the hardest for. Some years I feel like chasing mule deer, other years black tail , most years white tail. Does it make me a trophy hunter to try and test myself against all species?

I disagree. I think it has more to do with te westside kids not taking time off of school. If your dad goes on an annual trip to eastern washington to chase mulies for a week your probably not going to get to go with him until you graduate high school. There are not many parents that would be willing to let their kid miss a whole week of school just to go deer hunting. Atleast thats how it was for me. So my first deer was a blacktail. When I started to go with my dad to eastern Washington after I graduated I didn't become a trophy hunter by any means. I was just afforded more time for the trip.

My parents were pretty understanding.... Got the whole deer and elk season off most years.... Man the packets of homework they would send me off with.....
