I was in Mexico and saw the pop can reels that some of the guys used........don't get any cheaper than that! They wind the line around the pop can, then chuck the lure out there with the can end turned towards the lure. They even caught fish, but I sure know that I caught WAY more than they did. The high end rods and reels cast farther and are more sensitive than any cheap brand. Does it always matter, no. Does it matter sometimes, yes. Well, I want to be on the sometimes end of that statement.......
Time is valuable, and so is gas these days, so I want to maximize both.
I still let the kracker I am taking fishing use a crap rod for what it is worth.

No ones saying that you cant catch fish with inexpensive equipment. All that people are saying is that you can have a better experience with better gear. If you have never used some of the gear that's been mentioned you don't know the difference and therefore the point is mute. You can golf with a $30 set of clubs from Goodwill and shoot a 90 if you've never held another golf club or used anything different then those clubs are fine until you grab a set of Callaways and go out and shoot an 85. Yea its only a 5 shot difference and in the end who cares, but you may have a better time doing it and feel more confident in what you are doing. Will ugly stix catch fish? OF COURSE THEY WILL! A god damned pool cue with some line on the end will as well. Everyone has their preferences.
For me I found the best bang for your buck is St. Croix. For around $100-$150 I get a rod that I have the utmost confidence will get the job done the way I want to get the job done. For many its a $30 dollar Ugly Stick, for others its a $350 IMX Loomis. No reason to trash either of them! as long as everyones having a good time and stands behind the gear and techniques they are using it really doesn't matter.  :twocents:

I say we have a certified Hunting-Washington Steelhead or salmon days.

I just want to fish with people that have the same likes that I do...

It seems like alot of our fisheries in this state are not "group" fisheries.  I would be interested in going fishing with some guys on the board.  I am gearing up for the Columbia springer season coming up if anyone wants to talk springers.

My cousins and I have caught more steelhead plunking with an old ugly stick downrigger rod and a $60 Okuma 9 1/2' spinning rod than most folks will catch in a life time.   :chuckle:  I have several friends who fish every single weekend for either steelhead or salmon.  These guys catch literally hundreds of fish per year and their favorite rods?...................  Cheap Okuma's!

how did people ever catch steelhead and salmon in the 60's and 70's? i mean that was before float fishing and before super fancy rods. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Apparently they only caught half as many  :chuckle:

I'd be down for a salmon day or something.  I literally just got into salmon fishing this August and built a new st.croix rod for it.  I've been almost exclusively bass and trout before hand.  It would be awesome to go out and shoot the BS with like minded folk and learn some pointers

thing is some people here are talking about bobber fishing, downrigging and trolling it doesnt matter what the hell your using....when your bouncing the bottom feel is everything! the lighter the rod the more one will feel and thats where the highend rods come into play not to include the repetitive casting in a day it takes a toll on your elbow and wrist. dont even get me started about guys and cheap reels vs nice reels those are worth there weight in gold!
