I traded a Ruger for a Taurus!
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:58:32 AM »
I know most people are going to say Im crazy, because most people seem to hate taurus and ruger has a proven track record. Here is the trade I made. I traded my Ruger P95DC Stainless 9mm for a Taurus model 66 6" .357 mag revolver. The ruger had a lot of rounds down the pipe but never a malfunction, great pistol. BUT... I also have a Ruger SR9 that I bought new which I am very fond of. So I had 2 Ruger fullsize 9mm's, both polymer frame, both stainless slides, both 17+1 capacity. I bought the SR9 new though, so Im a little more attached to it.
The Taurus, manufactured in 1991, pre-lock but with transfer bar, As New in Box. Came with 2 boxes of ammo and a holster, plus the original wood grip and a hogue monogrip. Really nice revolver with deep blue. I think me putting 100rds thru it might have already doubled its round count! Im excited about it, and it carries the lifetime warranty. Supposedly that is void if you handload for it but shhhhhh!! I went and got a new die set and loaded up 200rds of light target loads already. I like the versatility that it has from light loads to magnum loads, and its a good looking seemingly well built revolver.
Lets hear some thoughts on my trade! I think its good because I expanded my arsenal.

I wouldn't say your crazy.  I just traded a browning x bolt 7mm mag for a nib mossberg 935.  traded a guni havent shot in years for a gun that I specifically needed.  even though the other party made out financially I got a new shotgun for 0 dollars that better fits my needs.  I have never been a big ruger fan but have been a taurus fan.  just havent found a ruger that fits me right....

Shot both, had trouble with my Taurus .357 not lasting past 800rds, the Ruger dropping the mag. But, I would have made that trade.

I bought that same Ruger for my brother for his 21st birthday.  That was 12 years ago.  Man time flies.

About the trade, I have no idea.  If you're happy, it was a good trade

I think it's a fair trade! The rugers are nice, I had a P97DC and it never let me down. The only problem is that you can't get much more than $200 if you want to move it. From the looks of it, that Taurus is worth at least $200

That is the best ruger to unload. I would have done it too.

Having never "traded" before, just wondering where you traded your pistol?  :dunno:

What was the reason for the trade? If there was some purpose behind it then ya it was a good trade. Are you gooing to  hunt with it?
I am not a huge fan of the 9mm but I would prefer 2 guns of the same caliber than  2 different guns with "superior" stopping power. :twocents:

Armslist.com is where I did the trade. I have to much repetitiveness in my safe. 3 pump shoutguns, 3 .22 rifles, 2 AR's, had 3 9mm's. So I guess I wanted something else, and I really wanted a Glock 20Sf 10mm, but I was offered the taurus and I liked it so I traded. Glock 20sf is still on my list to get. I suppose I could carry the .357 as a backup gun when hunting, and I probably will. I do like that the revolver doesnt rely on recoil to cycle the action, so I can load light reloads that would never work in a 9mm. I load my 9mm hot to ensure 10% reliability

Its a good.deal as long as you weren't planning to trust your life to the Taurus. I shot one of their .357s once and after a few round the fun would hear up, expand, and the striker wouldn't hit the rounds primer. After it cooled off a bit it would fire again. I suppose if you shot someone fast enough the expansion wouldn't be a problem but I refuse to trust my life with such a tool.  :twocents:

The .357 is going to be more of a shooter. Its not my idea of a nightstand gun bc its too big and I wouldnt want to mess up the bluing when it rubs all over the nightstand. The SR9 with 17rds and a rail mounted light can do that. I spend a lot of time shooting for fun and reloading, besides, I carry a kel-tec .380 most of the time I bet people would rather trust a taurus than that lol. The .380 has been very reiiable and I can hit my target with it, so Id rather carry a light gun in my pocket than a heavy gun on my belt. If I feel there is imminent danger I will carry my sr9 or stay home

I really wanted a Glock 20Sf 10mm, but I was offered the taurus and I liked it so I traded. Glock 20sf is still on my list to get.

You will not regret getting a G20SF. I don't carry mine the most because of its size, but it's my favorite handgun if we're not counting sentimental value. It's a wonderful combination of power, capacity, and reliability.

The first handgun I purchased when I turned 21 was a Ruger P95. For the price it's a great gun. Hi-cap mags are cheap and it would eat any ammo I put in it. The only downside is that it's a little on the clunky side for concealed carry and holster selection isn't that great. It's a great fun for an affordable and reliable 9mm.

I think you did pretty well. The older Ruger pistols aren't worth much, and the revolver with the extras is absolutely worth more. I've had a couple of different Taurus revolvers, and none of them have been bad guns. As long as you have realistic expectations of them, you won't be disappointed with a Taurus.

The Taurus will make great sidearm when youre in the field! I'd rather be pumping mag rounds into a bear or cat or unidentified, very large k-9 :chuckle: than I would a 9mm :twocents: and seeing as how you have the newer 9mm i would be satisfied! There is a lot to be said for having variety in your gun case, I have the same problem with a lot of the same type of gun.
What would life be without the thrill of the hunt?

The only thing that matters is whether or not you are happy with the trade. What others think doesn't mean squat.

Trading a Ruger for a Taurus...might sound scary on paper, but it can be done.

Trading a semi auto for a revolver...never a bad idea in my book.

The P95 was a sweet pistol, but Im really liking this revolver. As of today, I have only had it for a week maybe.. I have already put about 400rds thru it, and it shoots good. Today I was popping pieces of clays with it on a dirt and rock backdrop about 40 or 50yds away with ease. It really isnt quite as accurate as I figured it would be with about 9" of sight radius. Not that its not accurate, but I can make just as good of shots with my 9mm.
I still want to go get a Glock 20sf as soon as I can, and now that I have this revolver, Im thinking I need one in .44 magnum as well! Ive just got to figure out how to make more money to feed my habit lol.
