Zen Ray Prime HD
« on: January 29, 2012, 10:13:38 AM »
I just heard about these. I can't wait to see how well they do. I have heard good things. When I come back from A-Stan in 2014 I will be looking to upgrade on optics.

Yes, we are going to release this product in March.  Expecting the retail price around $700-$800. But we are considering an introductory special for members from several forums that we sponsor, Hunt-WA included.

What can you tell us about them? What is it that makes them different or better than the ED3. Is it basically the ED4 just a different name. I heard the ED3 doesn't have a field flattener lenses but the Prime HD does. Anyways tell us a bit about them since info about them is hard to come by. After Afghanistan I'm gonna look very hard at them.

It has completely different optical design from ED3 series, which is why we don't call it ED4. :)  Yes, it does incorporate a doublet field flattner to provide edge to edge sharpness with wide field of view. For most folks who rarely pay attendtion to the edge performance, the ED3 is an excellent choice with its brightness and large sweet spot.  But if you are sensitive to field curvature, the PRIME HD is your solution.

I notice that the FOV is 340 feet for the 10x42s which is about 20 feet larger than most competitors. Is the "Sweet spot" as large as on the ED3?  How does the Prime compare to the ED3 optically. Brightness, quality in low light etc. How much better is it. I guess what I am saying is I can't find any article or anything about them so please tell us all about it. Whats your "sales pitch" on them :) I really do look forward to their release and getting my hands on them.

The sweet spot will be bigger than ED3. Of course, it is much more expensive to product it too.  Since we haven't officially released them it, that's why you don't see much discussion of it.

I just purchased the ed3's yesterday they should be here on tuesday.  I sure wish I would have known they were coming out with these I would have waited another month.  I sure hope I like the ed3's. I went in blind with have never looked through them before.  No retailers in my area or even close.

Im pretty sure they have a 30 day return policy. I went in blind and bought them as well, never even thought about returning them.

Pretty excited. Zen-Ray is starting their pre-orders for the Prime HD.  It's says they will ship May 25th.  Unfortunately I won't be able to afford to buy optics this year. I need a quality pack to haul meat. So that will be my big purchase for this year. That and my yearly trip back home to hunt elk. I'll be in Afghanistan next year so maybe in 2014 I'll buy some. Of course by then they'll have something newer out.  :chuckle: here's their website.

Has anyone seen any reviews on these yet.  I was thinking about buying a pair but would like to see a couple of reviews before making a decision.

Charles,

Question about the eye pieces and how they adjust.  How do they? if you can describe it.  I've got a set of Leupolds, and they frustrate me, because the eye pieces can easily rotate from where I want them, with a little pressure against the face, and they will never be in the same position after you put them away and pull them out of the case the next time.  Each eye piece moves in and out independently of each other.
