« on: January 29, 2012, 02:34:17 PM »
Hey everyone, my friends 13 year old daughter is interested in hunting and i would like to buy her her own rifle to start practicing with(her father past away in 99).I dont have a ton of money to spend but i also dont want junk.I really want to know if there is certin models to stay away from.(she is very tall for her age so an adult stock will do).
               Thank you

Have a look at the Marlin X7 series.  Youth or adult, if you watch for a sale, you can pick the rifle and A scope for under $400.  They come with a trigger alot like the Savage Accutrigger.
There's a reason they call it hunting, not killing.

Tikka makes some great rifles. I would for sure check them out! You can find them at gun shows and most shops for around 450-500. Sometimes even cheaper if you can find a promo deal or store coupon.

Savage Axis  www.lowpriceguns.com

almost bought one of those, but then I tried out the remmy 700 sps compact and thought the extra money was well spent.

the axis was very bad

There are some really solid rifles in the lower end of the price spectrum. Personally, I like Savage rifles. Marlin and Mossberg both come to mind right away for affordable yet very functional guns. I'd pick one of them over a low-end Remington.

Cabelas has the rossi setup right now... I think it is 20ga. .22 & .243  for $279.00 right now. Great deal for a youth.

I have used Savage rifles for over 40 yrs.
Buy her a Savage or Stevens . But stay away from the AxisTheir triggers are not nice and the stocks are weak in the grip are. If you go to the Savage Shooters forum you can read up on them. Also no replacement stocks are available for the Axis.

Stay away from the Remington 770. The price is tempting but the gun is a pile...
