16 or 17 points really should be near 100% odds for many of the good archery and muzzleloader elk permits. Just don't apply for the permits that only have 1 or 2 available. There's really no reason anyone should accumulate that many points, unless you're applying for only the permits with the very worst odds. You really only need 8 or 9 points for a good chance at some of the best hunts.

HA, tell that to the 10 or 12 gus in my group with 16-17 points.  :chuckle:

Well, the trick is you need to apply for hunts that offer a lot of permits. Look at the archery permits for Observatory, Peaches Ridge, Goose Prairie, and Rimrock. Or if they hunt the westside look at the Toutle archery permit. Muzzleloader is the same, odds just not quite as good as archery because less permits are offered. But if you're picky and only apply for hunts with 1 in 500 odds, don't expect to draw with any amount of points.

Well I just looked at my handy dandy spreadsheet that gives odds of drawing based on your number of points. Here are some examples of high odds permits, this would be for 2011 if you had 17 points:

Archery permits

Observatory   99%
Peaches Ridge   79%
Cowiche    69%
Bethel    93%
Mountain View   69%

Muzzleloader

Peaches Ridge   36%
Bethel   70%
Observatory   60%

Now that you gave him your odds and best draw areas, you can drop YOUR success ratio since he will now be one more applicant you have to put in and compete with. I love the info thrown around on this site but it baffles me that people give info, which is public don't get me wrong, that the majority of guys would never know about. All of this decreasing your odds of drawing the top units and chasing trophy animals in Washington.

If someone has 17 points, I really hope they get drawn, for something. If they've waited that long they deserve to draw a permit before I do with my measly 4 points. I'm sure it's not hard to figure out the best odds permits, just look for the ones with the highest numbers.

I ran into a guy and his son last year during archery season he said his son had a bull permit and was drawn the year before also.  Most be nice.  I consider myself pretty lucky I've drawn two bull permits since I started applying in 2003.  Peaches ridge in 04 and goose prairie in 09.  Shot elk both years.

My dad and unclle have 17 points together. Every year they put in for  the watershed and cant get drawn. And there's 40 somethin permits for that draw! What's bad is I havnt even seen any real dandys get shot in there the last few years. I heard a lot of guys shot the first dink bull they saw in there last year.

Word of advice. Drive up and check it out before you put in for the watershed permit. Heard of too many guys that get drawn and then go look at it and then not even want to hunt it in past years. Don't put in for a tag you dont want to hunt!

My spreadsheet shows a 54% chance of drawing that permit last year with 17 points. So it shouldn't be too much longer for them!

Bobcat I hope so!  They've been waiting a very long time. He shot a small 6 point bull in there back in I believe the early 80s. But not sure.

He came from a any elk unit no draw required, and i have been hunting him a big bull for 24 years to finally get one so a lot of time goes into getting one, just got lucky this year the first time out. would like to go some where there was a chance to get one in one season
