Your thoughts on my son's hunting ability

I've plugged his numbers into some calculators and I'm just not sure.  Come this fall, he'll be at a 22" draw length and 40lbs.  Is this going to be enough to put down a deer/elk?  I just don't think so but I'm looking for opinions.

With heavy enough arrow no problem. Watched Uncle Teds wifes arrow go clean through a zebra and she shoots 50lbs i believe.

At 22" draw length though?  Not a lot of shaft drive with only 22"

Ya thought about it. I would do some testing by shooting into plywood or somthin and see how it penetrates!

I'm pretty confident with an ultra sharp, cut on contact 2 blade broadhead you would be fine for deer.  I wouldn't feel to good about shooting an elk with that setup.  Try to buy a fast, efficient compound if you can.

My Wife only shoots 24.5"  So she is only getting 20-25 FPS more then your son at 22"
She does shoot a little more poundage (46#) to be exact, and she has shot clean through several deer and killed a Zebra with that setup..
As long as he is accurate and has a sharp broadhead I say no problem!

Hey DoubleJ, With that situation, I'd just get him very close and pick a very good shot.
35 - 45lb recurves have killed a lot of deer and a few elk over the years. These newer compounds will do just fine provided you stay within reasonable limits.

get a rack of ribs,put in large ziplock bags. have him back off it to your set shooting distance. shoot and check you penetration. Think a pork rack should be good size for a deer, beef would be elk. that way you can figure out your distances he can penetrate.

Might want to look at a KE calculator.  With 40# and 22" draw, he is probably less than 20ft/lbs.

This one only goes down to 24" draw, but it might be helpful.  I say get him shooting as much as possible and slowly crank the wieght up.  Hopefully he will also ahve a growth spurt and you can also increase the lbs too. 

A heavy arrow with a sharp two-blade cut on contact BH would help (as Momentum is better than KE), but he should be over 25ft/lbs KE before chasing deer size critters.  Thinnest shafts possible, with as much FOC (i.e, weight forward of center) will also help w/penetration.

Keep him shooting and poundage will increase pretty quickly!

my lady shoots a 42 lb diamond edge at 23".  Shoots axis 500 with 85 grn montecs.  shot her first bull a couple years ago at 20 yards.  Arrow zipped right on through!

His "hunting" setup will be CE Piledriver 350's cut at 27" that weigh 281gn, quickfletch quick spins that add 28gn, and 100gn Magnus Stingers 2 blade broadheads for a total weight of 409gns.  I am kind of torn between the 100gn stingers and the 125gn.  125 would give a better FOC but, puts the arrow weight up to 434.  Too heavy?

I know the 350's are a bit stiff but, they are my arrows, I have a couple dozen on hand already, and after doing about 4 nights of reading, the only real issue I can find online about using an "Over spined" arrow is that his groups might open up a bit at longer distances, which won't even come into play until his draw weight gets up big enough to where that won't be an issue anymore anyway.

I wonder what the velocity of that setup would be? My gut feeling is, do as others have said... keep the shots to under 20 yards, make sure he's got it all together and can make the shot... shoot BEHIND the shoulder... a small broadhead like the Montec Alwine mentioned or a smaller 2 blade (stinger?)...

I have been listening to some accomplished trad archers for many years and know that a 40# rc or lb will get the job done on deer or elk with good shot placement! Of course, that is 27-38 inches of draw... but with the compound, he's probably getting close to the same arrow speed as the recurve at the higher draw length, if not more?

I think the biggest question is if he can make the shot... but THAT...you wont know...until its over.

Have him try both broadheads and see how they tune.  The 125 grain head would mitigate some of your concerns about being overspined.

My issue with the 125gn magnus stingers is, when I have my bow set at 40lbs, with the same arrows, I can't hit the side of a barn with them.  Don't know why.  I have some stingers in both sizes and will try them both
