Need someone to Tan my Bear hide from last fall
« on: February 03, 2012, 02:49:53 PM »
I killed my first Bear last fall and I'm interested in getting the hide tanned.
It's a nice Chocolate phase bear and I would consider doing a rug but it's just not large enough in my opinon to spend the $$$ on a full rug.  I'd like to just get the hide tanned so I can hang it up on the wall or over a railing in our hunting cabin.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks!

I'd get the rug! Nice bear, may not be huge but good color! Maybe a half body mount off the wall?
What would life be without the thrill of the hunt?

Smallerish bears make the best rugs I think. Cheaper to have done and don't take the entire wall. Get a rug with that one. Great bear!

Depending on where you live just take it to someone close. Good idea on just getting it tanned. A lot more usable that way and cheaper.

I think you should ask one of the sponsors like Michelle nelson

My son and I had the same idea for the our bears from last fall.  We just took them to a local taxidermist and he did them for $150 each.  That's much cheaper than a full rug.  After a couple days though, when they started drying, they also started to shrink and curl along the edges.  We took them back to the taxi and hes working on them some more so hopefully they still turn out.  I thought they looked pretty cool when we first got them home.

Your bear looks like it would make a nice rug.  If not, I think just tanning them is a good idea.

Here's what ours looked like when we first got them home.

KimberRich,

It might not be a huge Bear but it is your First and it is a BEAUTIFUL color phase!  The hide looks excellent on it.  BULLBLASTER makes an excellent point to consider.  Smaller Bears are cheaper to rug and take up less room on the wall.

I charge $55 per L/F (Nose to tip of tail) to do a Dry Tan.

I charge $165 per L/F to do a Bear Rug.  My Rugs are sewn.  You get to choose 2 colors of felt for the border.  Comes with 5 hangers on the back.

Nice bear, do the rug you won't regret it. I agree with Michelle. You will have a lot more places to put a smaller rug, and they look better than some huge monster.

Not sure were ya live but I wouldn't have no problem getting your bear to the tannery that I use. What have you done with the cape. Is it turned and fleshed and salted? Give me a call if you don't live close I could recommend taxidermist to you that could help

I can vouch for Michelle's work.  I shot a small color phase bear last year that has some pretty cool blonde highlights on it's butt, eyes, and ears.  I alredy have a nice color phased bear rug and couldn't convince myself to have another one, but wanted to have it tanned.  Michelle did a great job on it and my three little boys have decided that it is now their bear rug.   The nice thing about Michelle is she did all the ears, skull, etc.
