Huckleberry bears?
« on: July 23, 2008, 09:52:52 AM »
Are there many bears in the Huckleberry unit? We will be in there at the end of Sept. looking for a moose for the wife to tag. Should I be concerned about packing a rifle or should I just let my wife shot one if we see it?

Never have hunted this area so it will be a learning experience.

Gives you a good excuse to carry a gun. I would be more afraid of a big bull in the rut, the bears will just run if they see you. A big bull will try and make you one of his cows if you know what I mean... To me more exact with your questions yes there are quite a few bears in that unit, take a look at Stansgar MT. the back side of Waitts Lake up toward the Marble Quarry. I have hunted that unit with my dad since I was a kid if you need more help with the moose let me know.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

There's lots of bears. I think (not positive) that the HB unit has the highest bear harvest statewide. That said, as much time as I spend up there I tend not to see them after mid July when it dries out. I'd say there's a pretty good chance of running into one. If you do end up contacting me when you come out the area I had in mind also has lots of turkeys and grouse up there. Turkey is sept 27-oct 3rd beardless only but it's a two bird limit. Also if your a predator hunter there's a ton Bobcats so if you're a caller there's a good chance to call one of those in. Moose, turkey, bear, grouse, bobcats..... sounds like a great time if you plan on staying a while and tag your moose quickly.

It seems that if the term "HUCKLEBERRY" shows up its just a matter of time before Gutpile shows up :chuckle:
It appears it would be a dire mistake to not take you up on your offer!

I will be in contact :hello:

I checked the harvest report and the past few years its been a toss up between the HB and Sherman for bears harvested!
I will be packing my .280!

If anyone is worried about me shooting my wifes moose, DON'T! She is an excellent marksman and is very proud of the deer she has harvested in the past, if I tried Gutpile might have to remove my .280 from a very bad spot! :bdid:

 ;) Who me???  :chuckle:  :chuckle:

Yeah I love Huckleberry. Been going up to my little section of it since I was a little kid and still love it. It's not the prettiest country but I sure love hunting there. I shoot lots of grouse and turkeys there and finally got my spring bear up there this year. You have no idea how envious I am that your wife drew a moose tag up there. I think I'm the only idiot in the world who can't tag a deer up there though.  :dunno:

I'm becoming a pest arent I?  :chuckle:  :chuckle:
