Actual blanket?
« on: May 07, 2012, 05:30:38 PM »
General question for everyone:

Has anybody ever created an actual blanket out of a bear? I don't mean a decoration blanket w/ the head attached, but an actual honest to god blanket to be used?

I'd very much like to hunt bear seriously some day (instead of just carrying the tag around in my pocket!) but I think what I'd like to do is make a functional blanket out of the hide, and keep the skull/claws.

How practical is this? Any information or pictures would be appreciated, thanks!

I would think just doing a soft tan hair on would be the way to go for a blanket  :dunno: its what I intend to do if I ever get a bear and cant afford to rug it.
sort of a side track but I know there is a company that does soft tan on sheep skins that is washable its a pretty sweet deal and is how they make those wonderful sheepskins for baby cribs etc.  I have wondered if they could do other species as well with this method but never bothered to write and ask.

Never thought about that.
Hell, never kept any of my hides.
Killed a baker's dozen of them and have given all the hides away. All I wanted was the meat.  :dunno:
Would be a cool blanket though.

Had a friend do a hair on tan of an elk hide for used it on their bed as a top layer. They liked it very much.

I had my bison hide tanned and it hangs over the back of the couch. When it's chilly out we use it as a blanket while watching TV. You could do it with any hide. For a blanket for your bed you could tan a couple of bear hides then combine them into one. I don't know what size bed you have but for us it's a queen and there aren't many black bears around big enough to make a queen size blanket.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

Yeah, you can do it.  A buddy skinned a black bear for a rug, but skinned the back legs wrong.  The taxi suggested just doing a soft tan.  It cost half what a rug would've.  He would use it as a blanket or kind of wear it sometimes.

Awesome, thanks guys. Yeah that's basically exactly what I was thinking. Not necessarily a formal, full-sized blanket, just something soft and warm that could be used as a blanket.
