Lolo wolf down!
« on: February 06, 2012, 02:43:51 PM »
Went wolf hunting saturday up the Lochsa (Lolo Zone) with my hunting pard and good friend.  We literally saw more wolves than elk...  Not much of a story to tell here other than we were heading into a big drainage on snowshoes to chase a pack of 14.  Ended up finding a pack of 5 across the river and my buddy was able to put this young male down at about 100 yds!  I could've doubled up but my tags expired on Jan 1 (go figure, buy tags for the 2011 hunting season that runs through Jun30 in some units, but your tags expire with the calender year!) and I figured if we filled his two than we'd be doing alright.  I could see the others as they took off through the trees but Al couldn't so no follow up shots to try and drop a second one.

Scariest part of the whole ordeal was we had to wade chest high water for about 40 yds to get across the river and get to the wolf!  Getting him back across was interesting and Al ended up getting taken downstream for about 20-30 ft and went completely under and had to swim a bit.  Thank god we were only a few hundred yds from the truck and dry clothes!

We stopped in Kamiah on the way home and people were pulling into the parking lot to congratulate us and shake our hands!  It was pretty cool!  About 10 miles outside of Lewiston we passed a Honda CRV with a woman inside.  Her license plate read "WLFDNCR"... we just rolled down the windows and waved n smiled as we passed her....

We were going to setup and call but this was a "spot, grab gun and run 40 yds and shoot" hunt!  ;)

Rifle was a .280 Ackley shooting 162 hornady Amax.  I think from now on we're going to be using them on animals we don't care about the hide on.  It ripped a 8" exit wound on the backside!  Taxi friend thinks it can be fixed and he's getting it full body mounted so that side will just go against the wall!

About time we had one of our own post!

Beer is on me!
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

Thanks all... I don't post on this board much anymore but I figured everyone here would appreciate the post!
It was pretty cool to stop at a gas station in Kamiah and within 5 minutes have 5 different trucks pull in and people shaking our hands and taking pictures!  Thumbs up and waves from people fishing the whole ride back as well!
