I have a stuck choke, and have tried using various penatrating compounds with no success, and even tried to heat the barrel last night by keeping the barrel on top of the woodstove for 10 minutes. Nothing seems to work, and before I ship it off to the manafacture does any body have any remodies for removing a stuck choke? I forgot to say, Im running out of room for using the choke wrench as the grooves are starting to round with repeated attempts on it. Thanks for any help in this.

Don't heat the barrel, stop with the wrench if it's stripping the grooves, and get it to a smith or someone with the right tools. Next time be sure to pull the choke and put choke tube lube on it after every hunt. When the season is over and you plan on storing your gun for a while pull the choke and leave I out. They get stuck pretty easy and it's fairly common. Good luck

Carlsons makes a choke tube wrench that goes inside the choke and it expands outward. This is the one I use so I never have the stripped notches. Soak it with Kroil penetrating oil.

Make your own with 50/50 atf and acetone. Be careful with the heat double guns are soldered as are the ribs. The expanding wrench is getting close to your last home remedy if you strip the notches.

Give it the kroil, and let it sit for a couple days re applying often. It will come.

Thanks for the input, I stopped by ACE and they were sold out. I will stop by again next week and see if htey have any Kroil on hand. That choke tube wrench looks great, I plan on ordering it

Seth, you are going to pay about $10 for 8oz of kroil, and for about even money, you can mix up a ton yourself. I had a REM700 ejector that was so stuck I could not move it with a punch. I soaked it for a couple days....it moves freely now.

Do you mean pooring the liquid into a container and then standing the gun up barrle first and letting it sit for a few days? I have tried a remington brand of a breaking compound by squirting in between the choke tube and barrell. Did this on several applications over several hours

Stand the barrel up in a corner, muzzle down in a glass cup or jar (acetone may attack some plastics) fill it up with the mix. Forget about it for a couple days.....repeat as necessary. You are going to have to shake the atf/acetone mix a bit to blend it.

When you get that choke out, another good lube is Shooters Choice all purpose grease. It comes in a 10cc syringe. I use it on my choke threads and I use it to lube my over under shotgun when I put it together.

Just got done trying to remove the choke after a 48 hour soak.

I am going to buy the wrench now, and if that doenst work off to a new barrell. Thanks for the input guys, if I had paid attention to the choke this would have never happend. Lesson Learned

If loosening with the wrench does not work, try tightening it...re-soak and then loosen....

Not trying to thread jack my own thread but... I stripped the paint down to bare metal, due to some salt water exposure every weekend hunting the salt during waterfowl season. I bought some birchwood bluing, and for some reason it only works on my internal parts. The external parts it doensnt seem to hold. I have tried putting on 10 coats of it and have only wasted my time. Anybody have any ideas on how to get the bluing to work on the external parts?

polish the metal.

wash it in hot water.......getting the metal temp up is important.

spray it with 409, it acts as a surfactant and keeps the streaks to a minimum

wipe on the bluing and polish it back.

repeat as necessary.

I have never tried that brand, but the brownells works pretty good. having a clean and oil free start is important. if you are hunting around saltwater, I would suggest cerakote. get the air cure version and follow the direestions. it will take a week and a day to dry (seriously) but it is the best for salt protection.

I painted the gun, and it looks fantastic now.

Cant wait to get some time to introduce it to some coyotes.

Seth, get after the choke with a heat gun, not a torch....once the kroil is smoking try the wrench. The last option is to cut it out on the lathe or mill.

i haven't had a whole lot of luck re-bluing either. i redid the side of my wingmaster and it looks OK until i use it in wet weather and it starts turning kind of a greenish patina. might just have to get a cheap clunker for duck hunting.

If you want to have a great blue look into rust bluing. It is something anyone with patience can do and do it cheaply.

Soak it for about a week in break free or some penetrating liquid. If that will not get it to break loose, go to a pharmacy. Ask for mint oil.. they will ask you why you want it, since it is poisonous. Explain it is for breaking loose rusted threads... they will sell it to you, but it is not cheap. put like 4 drops on the choke and let the mint oil get pulled into the threads. Let it sit over night. It should come free with some help.

Holler at me if you still need help. I have managed to get some nasty chokes out of barrels.... sometimes the choke has to be replaced, but it is out..

Heard of wintergreen oil for that application, not actual mint oil. Let me know how this works. I know wintergreen makes a whole hangar smell nice when we get important things seizing up and don't wanna cut.

It's one of those "if all else fails to penetrate and get this bolt unstuck, use this stuff" kinds of things. I've never actually seen it work though

I've just seen it used in an attempt to miracle stuck metal apart. I've heard it works wonders but I guess the cases I've seen were hopeless to begin with

Im done spending money on gun oils that are sussposed to do that, so I will get this wintergreen and give it one last shot. Do I need to heat the barrel with the wintergreen?

Add the heat to the kroil, that causes a capilary action that will pull the stuff into the threads. Just be sure to stop when it starts to smoke so you don't release the rib.
