New to archery...what arrow size do I need?
« on: February 01, 2012, 06:25:47 PM »
I'm a rifle hunter that wants to try archery. First to shoot for fun, then eventually Turkey hunting. Thanks to my brother in law I now have a nice used bow that fits me, but I don't know what length arrows I need. I would like some advice on arrow brand, type, length. Also, what would be a good release for me purchase? And last, what is a good priced, easy to use, sight for me to start with? Thank you for the help.

your best bet is to take it to a pro shop and have them check it out before you shoot it. check your draw length and the bows draw length. than they will point you in the right direction on arrows.

Agreed! Let the pros set you up with the right stuff and you'll be much happier shooting. Get in touch with your local bow shop and take a lesson, too.

Go down and talk to "RED" at the archery shop just north of Chewelah. She knows her stuff. That's where I went and she set me up, I already had a bow I bought on-line. She used to shoot for Hoyt if I remember right. Very well worth it.

Don't stop with turkey. Nothing like smelling an elk before you run one through. It's awesome.

Take it wo a local shop. They will cut the arrows to the right size and get you setup. I have shot a lot of different arrows and I am pretty stuck on goldtips. You can get the expenditions at about 75.00 a dz. My wife and bro shoot them. I shot the xt's which run about 120.00.

 :yeah:

Ive.been shooting the cheap stuff for a.few years now. It has been a long time since ive lost or broken a number of arrows so im starting to think about a more spendy, light weight arrow to pick up a little speed.

Thank you. I will stop in at the archery shop in Chewelah. The bow I have is a PSE Nova. 28" draw length, its at 50lbs. now with a 60lb. max. Big game hunting is a possibility down the road once I become very a comfortable and confident shooter. I appreciate the feedback.

You will probably find yourself with a arrow like a goldtip 55-75. That will cover all the ranges on your bow. 50 is a little tuff because its right on the line to move into a stiffer spine. If you go to the 35-55 it will be a little light on spine and you will have a harder time getting to the minimum required arrow weight.
