Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'll go for the 22 mag. Hopefully I can pick one up this weekend.

........ :dunno: both are rimfire cartridges

Ok, thanks, Wasn't sure.

Here is an article comparing the 2 as well as the 5mm mixed in.

ive shot a pile of rock chucks with my 17 also quite a few coyotes with it. ya they may run 20 yards unless it is a head shot. but that is something that im not to worried about. over all i enjoy my 17 hmr.  :twocents:

.22mag has twice the bullet size and more energy, .17 shoots flatter and faster.  You can't lose with either one

I say why have just one?  I have an H&R single shot .17hmr.  I can blow up milk jugs with it at 300 yrds all day long.  I find it to be fun to shoot.  I'd get me a 22mag too if I could.

Hahaha! Wind must never blow where your at and you can drain milk jugs all day long but you sure aren't blowing them up.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Well, the wind is a factor in anything you shoot, but that dosnt mean that you can't blow up milk jugs at 300 yards with a 17hmr.  Here are some ballistics for you to chew on.

17HMR 17 grn V-max muzzle velocity/Energy @ 0=2550/245  Ballistic Coefficient (G1)=.125

100 yards  Velocity/Energy=1943/143
200 yards Velocity/Energy =1442/76
300 yards Velocity/Energy =1103/45.9
300 yard drop with a 100 yard zero=-33.17
300 yard wind drift with wind @ 90 deg from target and 10 mph=35.5"

22 WMR 30grn V-max Muzzle Velocity/Energy@ 0=2200/322  Ballistic Coefficient (G1)=.095

100 yards  Velocity/Energy=1498/149
200 yards Velocity/Energy =1062/75
300 yards Velocity/Energy =882/60
300 yard drop with a 100 yard zero=-59.99
300 yard wind drift with wind @ 90 deg from target and 10 mph=54.9"

Looks to me that a 30 grn 22WMR is factored more by the wind at 300 yrds than a 17 grn 17hmr is and no cost difference in the ammo really:dunno:

I am very happy with the 17hmr. I like the Marlin model 25 with the bull barrel. It is VERY accurate. I enjoy setting empty shotgun hulls out at 100 yards and trying to shoot out the primers. This is how accurate my rifle is. I use the Hornaday 17gr ammo.  I have not had an issue killing game up to Coyote size. My vote is 17hmr in a Marlin bolt action.

The 22mag is also a fine choice.

Is there a website with this information?  I was just curious how wind effect was at the other distances.

Marlin .22 mag bolt gun...especially since I have had 2 of them stolen...can't deny their popularity!!   :dunno:

IMO, rimfires are best used as rat/squirrel guns.  Sure they will kill other things but they are best suited on rabbit size critters or less.

I was a 17hmr hold out for a REALLY long time.  I didn't want nothing to do with those tiny little worthless 17gr bullets.  Until I shot one.  Then I couldn't get one bought and scoped up fast enough.  These little 17hmr's are impressively accurate out of a factory rifle.  I've got a Savage 93 that will out shoot any 22mag I've ever owned.  I still like my 22mags and I still have 2 of them but day in and day out the 17 is more accurate.  I don't think the 17 is anymore accurate of a round than the 22mag is but I certainly believe the available ammo for the 17hmr is more accurate than the factory 22mag stuff.

My dad has an older Ruger M77 22mag that shoots very well.  After I got my 17 and he shot it a few times he ordered a drop in 17 barrel for his Ruger.  Now all he shoots is that Ruger with the 17 barrel on it and he too was a 17hmr hater.

I love my 17 HMR.  Never noticed the wind being a significant factor.

Then you must have lived a sheltered life while your .17 was in your hand. The wind is a factor with a 190gr Matrix being slug from my 7mm WSM.
Maybe you're the ballistics expert, but it looks like you need a proofreading course.  You missed the word "significant" in my post.

I can guarantee my " Significant " is a much less tolerance than yours. :chuckle:

If i could get a 22mag in the old Ruger 10-22 I would get one, otherwise i would go the 17hmr route. I used a 17 for ground squirrels in OR and it was a blast... Wind did affect it, but use any gun at its maximum range and you will have to compensate.  :twocents:

.17 HMR ammo is a bit more expensive than 22 Mag.  Recently I saw .17 HMR ammo in a Cabela's flyer for $9.99/50.  A real good price!

My vote is for the .22 mag and Savage. But I've never shot a .17 either.

I was thinking about getting one for awhile. The local pawn/gun shop had a nice little Ruger (M77 I think?  :dunno:) with a synthetic stock and Volquartsen carbon wrapped barrel. It was really cool looking and I hmmm'd & haaaa'd over it for a few months trying to come up with a reason (or excuse) to buy it - like I really even need a reason - and then one day I went in there and someone else had bought it and made my mind up for me.... oh well....
I aint superstitious - cuz its bad luck!
