Need Advice: South Africa plains game hunt
« on: February 12, 2012, 08:34:09 AM »
My buddy and I are planning a plains game hunt for May/June this year or next, hunting gemsbok, kudu, and impala.  Money is such that we can go, but probably just one time so we are looking for an outfit that can do better than a bronze medal trophy and offer a great hunt.

Spoke with the guys from "Adventure Hunts" at the show in Puyallup.  Any thoughts about their operation or others?  Any other advice about preparation for a hunt there, time of year, etc.?

Contact Jim Hackiewicz.  He lives in WA and has a great reputation.

He has treated me exceptionally well.

I hunted with W. F. Mans Safaris in Namibia.  Some big Kudu there and I got a gold medal Springbok.  Had fun with the hunt.

I went with Adventure hunts & was probably some of my photos still in his display, was pleased with the service.
whoever you decide to go with you should contact custom travel @ http://customtravelafrica.com/ they take of everything & are partners with the Afton Guest house in Jo'burg, their staff is very knowledgable about guns/customs/requirements & can be a huge help in getting thru that portion of the trip.
Custom travel gives you DETAILED instructions about where to go & who to talk to.
Ken did mention to me that he had to pay some wierd "gun handling" fee @ Upington airport. be careful of such scams.
on a side note, the Africaaners are very afraid of the crimes & seem to have their own version of what's safe & what's not. Not saying crimes don't happen but I never felt in danger even when my driver forgot to come take me to dinner 1 night & a friend & I had to walk to a restaurant @ 11pm. True,we were in Pretoria not Jo'burg but they should come to Detroit if they wanna be scared!
good luck & I am willing to bet you'll have such a great time this will only be the 1st not the only time you go!

I have done 3 different hunts with Adventure Hunts and not had any problems. In both South Africa and Zimbabwe. There package hunts are hard to beat for the price. When you get there it is pretty hard to not just keep pulling the trigger. the rut is on in May for the kudu so you never know what you will see, just like bucks around here. Have a good trip you will diffinetly want to go back.

Happy to share any of my experiances with you over the phone, a beer or whatever.

I have a thread going on my hunt here as well:

I have a 200+ page journal written (mostly photos) of my 2007 trip to Namibia that I can send to you via an FTP site if you are interested.  Lots of info on planning a trip included.
