Looking into getting a real camera!
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:07:33 AM »
So I've been thinking about upgrading from the standard point and shoot digital camera to something a little more fancy.  I know a little bit about the DSLR's and have enrolled in some standard photography classes to learn a bit more.  What I can't decide on is what camera to get.

My current standard point and shoot is a Nikon S90.  Not a bad little point and shoot and has lots of manual features that I enjoy using.  Before I go out and spend a bunch of money on something, I want to make sure I am getting the most bang for my buck to start.  Would like to stay under $2,000 to start and then build from there with additional lenses down the road.  I've been looking at a few and wanted to get some of the photo experts opinions on the ones I am looking at.

1.  Sony - NEX-7K/B 24.3-Megapixel Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:  This camera is brand new to the market, and in some places is back ordered.  It is not a DSLR, but rather a smaller camera with all the same features as the bigger DSLR cameras.  The reviews on it sound very good and that it might be the way to go.  I like the idea of having something smaller than a big DSLR.  However, I don't see to many people talk about Sony cameras on here so I'm not sure about this one.

2.  Canon - EOS 7D 18 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera (Body with Lens Kit) - 18 mm - 135 mm:  Open to suggestions on models or kits available.

3.  Nikon - D7000 16.2 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-105mm Lens:  Open to suggestions on the models or kits available.

All of these start at less than $2,000.  Would I better off getting something I didn't list that might be less expensive but would afford me the opportunity to buy a nicer lens up front?  I want to use the camera for everything from everyday pictures around the house to my daughter's fastpitch games, and then being able to take it out scouting with me throughout the year.

I know there are other threads talking about cameras and such, but figured since I was being specific about te models I was looking at that a new post would be warranted.  Appreciate any advice or feedback.  Thanks in advance

BuckHunter,

There are a couple of threads in the last month in this section going over camera bodies.

Your list is good.  My suggestion is to get a quality used body like a Canon 40D or something similar for 3-400.00 on ebay and other places.  Then drop that extra coin on lenses.  You will never regreat it.  I am using an old Canon XTi and take great pictures when I do my job behind the camera.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.
