Grunting buck

Last November I was walking through the woods and I heard a buck grunt. As I did not have a grunt tube with I moved on a little further a sat for a while.
Did the buck hear me walking and grunted to see if I was a deer?
Have any of you experienced hearing a grunt while walking and then called the buck over with a grunt tube?
