Hunting Dog for Excellent Home

I hate to do this, but my dog has growled/snapped at my young son a number of times and has not responded appropriately to my behavioral modification techniques. While I don’t think he will ever bite him, I am not willing to take that chance with my son and I plan on having more children in the coming years.

His name is Diesel. He is ½ Chessie/ ½ lab. Neutered.  Current on all vaccinations. About 85lbs of solid muscle, lean athletic build. 5 years old. He has the Chessie hair, but I typically keep him shaved down because of shedding and he heats up in the summer. In the winter I let it grow out.

 He has been professionally trained by one of the premier kennels in Nevada. He is force fetched, retrieves to hand, marks well with single retrieves, loves the water, and has excellent obedience. His training is primarily waterfowl but he has also been trained for upland. He can be walked off leash on a perfect heal. He does not bolt and will adjust his pace to yours.

He is a very loyal, but hard headed dog (Chessie). He was the Alpha and continues to behave this way. He requires a firm master or he will run all over you. He listens to me very well, but when the wife is around, he does as he pleases. He is an inside dog but will spend the days outside when it is warmer. I expect the same treatment for whoever becomes his new owner. He plays well with other dogs, never snaps, but will try exerting his dominance, if you get my drift. He loves food and will drool on your feet.

HE MUST GO A HARD HUNTING HOME!  This dog is 100% a hunter and enjoys being out in the field. Ducks and geese are his thing and he is alright with upland (he gets a bit lazy when the action is slow).

I think the best home for him would be a younger guy that loves to hunt ducks or someone that would enjoy having him as a companion and hunting dog. Once he is accustomed to you, he will never leave your side and his only desire is to please. He is fine with older kids and adults, but does not enjoy the manhandling that the little ones often dish out.

I have had this dog since he was 6 weeks old and it pains me to have to give him away, but I just can’t take that risk with my little one and more on the way.

Oh man that's a great looking dog! and too bad you feel you have to re-home him.  Yeah kids can be pretty rough on dogs sometimes and it is quite common for a dog to growl saying he's had enough. If it was me I would find a way to keep the kids and dog separated or explain to them the best you can to leave the dog alone. All my male labs have givin my kids warning growls and we worked it out without any bites

My Brittany will growl and occasionally snap at my kids when she doesn't want to take any more abuse. She has never bitten them but does let them know when they are being too rough.

I have a neighbor who is a hardcore waterfowl hunter. I will let him know about your dog. He has a young lab, but it went blind when it was less than a year old, so he has a dog, but not a hunting dog. He may be interested. I think it would be perfect. He has two kids but they're grown and on their own now.

Unfortunately, the kid is at home with the dog all day when I'm not around. I could kennel him, but I don't want him to spend his days in the kennel. My boy is only 15 months and doesn't take to reason to well. HAHAHA! If he was 100% lab I think the problem would be solved, it's the Chessie temperment that worries me.
