Smelt
« on: February 14, 2012, 07:44:25 PM »
The smelt are in the river and :

It seems that my kids will never get to enjoy the pulling of a full net of smelt.

Maybe not even dipping a net in the river for smelt.  Or ever eating a fresh "Mess" of smelt.  :'(

So enjoy them sealions and seagulls as you are the protected speices who will reap the rewards of poor management , conservation, commercial dipping, etc.   :bash: :bash: :bash:

What sort of equipment would a guy get for some kids to participate in the derby, I have a couple kids and a couple high functioning mentally disabled folks that would absolutely love to get involved in that, never done it but sounds like it would be quite a day for these guys !!

What do we need to get started ??  :IBCOOL:

Any rod will work. Get a couple of sabiki rigs and a small weight for the end of the line. An ice chest orbucket to put your catch in. It use to be a riot when the run was good. Havent been in a few years but the last time we went it was not good at all. If I didnt have a wedding to attend on the 25th I would take my boys up just to try.

its not that great anymore up here around LaConner but there is still a couple tucked away spots that you can still catch enough you eat ...I remember the days when we would go out around the shell refinery in Anacortes and rack the sheet out of them ... MAN THOSE DAYS ARE GONE  :bash: :bash: :bash: :dunno:

A guy could prolly dip a sea lion pretty easy too!    Commercial guys aren't at fault.   Every year I get prolly 100lbs of older smelt that guys dipped and never use.  Lots of freezers still full of freezer burnt smelt that sportsman let rot.

On a side note I get them as my dogs dont care if they are freezer burnt and they are wonderful at making a dogs coat shine!  Very oily critters!  Believe the indians used them as candles and fire starter.

Find a tribal friend and get some from them.  Apparently they can dip despite the protected status.  Why does that seem wrong to me?

Federally protected but ok for tribal members to harvest?  Does this mean they can kill the wolves too?
