I'm thinking of getting a 17hmr for coyote hunting but I'm not sure if its legal to use and I can't find it anywhere in the game pamphlet can anyone shed the light on this for me so I don't spend money on a gun that'll be useless thanks

It's legal but I would suggest a 22 magnum instead. It has a larger bullet and more of a bullet selection. With the 17hmr you have your chose between 17-25gr and 22wmr has 30-50gr bullets. This is more stopping power on coyotes but still wouldn't want to try shots much over 150 yards.

or a larger 22 cal such as a.223 or .22-250. .17 is good for small game such as squirrels, rabbits and grouse. But for anything larger I'd step it up.

My minimum recommendation for caliber is .223

I too would advise you to at least look in to the .17 Hornet by Hornady, it's low recoil and great .17 caliber ballistics will put the 22Mag and 17HMR to shame, otherwise a 204 Ruger or 223 are much better choices than either of the rimfire rounds.

I have a 17 HMR and love it.... for rock chucks or anything smaller than a coyote really haha however I do use it seeing that the next gun in line is my 7mm which blows the hides in half. With that said its great for keeping pelts if your into it but you do need to shoot them behind the ear or close to. shot one in the neck today on my way back to school and they just run too damn far. Great gun but you need about 150 yards and a head shot at the furthest from experience which has problem to be a task in itself.

they run a little ways. i shot one with my 17 at about 150 yards behind the shoulder he ran 20 or 30 yards and piled up.

head shots work wonders. but i went back to my 243 and they dont twitch with that

I have shot a couple with my 17HMR. It does the job out to 150+ yards and is deadly accurate. Rare for me to have that close of a shot here. I have taken quite a few with my favorite, 7MM. I don't save the hides. I just want to get rid of those fawn eating, game bird egg sucking animals!

yup. both are my go to varmint guns lately. actually been taking the .204 a little more lately.

You just can't have too many guns! I have a buddy that says if you know how many guns you own you don't have enough! He just bought a 50 BMG. He can't wait to smoke a coyote with that.

I shoot the 30gr Hornady V-Max in the .22mag for ground squirrels and maybe grouse......wouldnt consider yotes.....much wind and the .22 mag and or the .17 will be out to lunch at 100 yards.

No grouse unless it is a head or neck shot. I shot a grouse with my 17 hmr and half of the bird was gone.

Back to the caliber, if I was going to get a yote gun, I would have a 17 just as much as a 22 mag. If you are only shooting coyotes then why not get a .223

.17 HMR is real popular in states like Michigan where you must shoot coyotes with a rimfire. That being said, i only go coyote hunting with a .223, .204, 6.8 SPC, or 22-250. Or at the very least, my .22 K-Hornet, or .17 Fireball.

The 17 hmr is a must have in everyones arsenal. Just a fun gun to shoot. Great for ground squirrels.

You definitely made a good choice.

The 17hmr is a cool little gun but only carries its energy out to about 150 yards, past that it probably wouldn't kill anything bigger than a crow. A friend of mine in Montana told me a story of a buck a shot a few years ago with a 17hmr, said it was 246 yards or something like that a double lunged it and it only ran 40 yards, I called BS but he swore it was true... I killed an antelope doe with mine once at 150 yards, but that was my max range for that gun and it was head shots only, that being said it dropped her in her tracks (I had two witnesses

) I have seen several coyotes shot behind a spotlight with a 17 and they usually yelp and run off.

I use my savage .17 hmr it does wonders I have killed them out to 150 yards, I only take head shots though
