Rimrock info
« on: August 05, 2008, 10:08:18 AM »
My cousin got drawn this year for an any bull tag in the rimrock unit. Neither one of us have spent much time there. Anyone have any success in there or been drawn for that tag before?  I've heard of a few bulls that are pushing 400" in there. Can anyone confirm that or is it  just myth?  ??? ???

Hey Crazy'
I have hunted that several times in the past. I drew the rifle bull tag for that unit a few years ago. While I wasn't successful that year, my cousin did shoot a nice satellite 5x5. I of course saw three spike bulls but held out. I hunted every day of the season but ended up eating some pretty crappy tag soup. As to your question on 400" bulls, I don't think so. But I have personally seen some 340+ bulls in the past. Try looking around Government meadows up towards Dome Peak. There are several locked gate roads on the 1203 road system that might be worth the hike.

Yeh there are probably a 400 bull in there but I wouldn't hold out for him, a 330 bull would be tough to pass on.

Keep in mind that to some people they all look like 400 bulls! cause it's just a matter of 4-6 inches on each tine and theres your diffence between a 350 and a 390+ and we all know how hard it is to tell a couple of inches difference from a distance!

But there are nice bulls in there and I agree with Ridgerunner ...  I wouldn't be going in thinking I'm holding out for a 400 unless of coarse I had put an eye on him and I was sure where he was!

sounds like you are going to have to scout alot!  :)

When I was hunting it last year I talked with a guy that pretty much lives in the unit and knows it real well. I knows were there is a bull that he putts at about 380. His friends have sheds from this bull. I hunted the area were he hung out but never seen him. It's a pretty hard unit to hunt. Real thick and steep.

Last year the further I went into the wilderness the more bulls I seen and they were talking a lot back there. I had chances but I ate tag soup ( muzzleloader hunt ).
