Bear gets hunter's deer

An acquaintance of mine gets his deer taken away by a brownie on Kodiak a few years ago. Jake also guides bear hunts there and other places.  Pretty amazing the power and speed of these animals which becomes more apparent as you see one in action up close.

I've had a couple up close and personal encounters with them myself in the 25 to 50 yard range and it always leaves me in awe.  My brother shot a moose one year that had to be left overnight. Got back first thing in the morning and the moose was gone, but there was a wide drag trail so they followed in the airboat. A few hundred yards off, they saw an antler sticking out of a pile of brush and dirt.  They recovered the moose a little dirtier for the wear and got out of there. They figured the bear was close by but the airboat scared it off.

Jake was pretty philosophical about it. He also punched a tag for that deer.  He's a pretty stand up guy.

ADF&G tells you when you hunt Kodiak or any other place with bears, "let the bear have your animal."  You can only legally shoot one if it's threatening you. That means coming at you, not just in the area. If you do have to take one in self defense, you have to skin it and bring the head and hide in to the nearest F&G office and turn it in. 

A friend of mine in Prince William Sound had just shot a deer and gutted it and was taking a sandwich break before hauled his deer out when he heard some brush popping. He looked up to see a bear making a beeline to him and his deer and he reached over and grabbed his gun and shot the bear at 10 yards. He told me his sandwich was still hanging out of his mouth through all the excitement. He hauled his deer out and headed to town as it was late and called a trooper in town and reported the bear. The trooper gave him the choice of going back out and getting the hide and skull or getting a ticket. He told my friend they were going to meet him out there to investigate the shooting to make sure it was a proper DOL kill. This wasn't just a little trip, was about 25 miles by boat. The next day it was blowing 50 and gusting higher. Rusty and his dad went out and got the hide and skull, but of course the troopers thought better of going out in weather like that and let the investigation pass.

Have heard of this but never seen it. My brother had a buck stolen out of his skiff one year in Sitka. Tied the boat up in the marina went home to get his truck and trailer and when he returned his buck was gone. Cool video!

My wifes uncle was gutting a deer he just shot on a steep hillside.... He said it kept sliding down the hill and he'd keep adjusting his body to hold it up.... He couldn't hold it up any longer for some reason it was just too heavy... He let go and it went down the hill right between his legs..... He turned to watch it fall.... As a griz was walking away with it in his mouth.... He wondered how long he played tug of war with the damn thing not even knowing....

One year we were in the high country during September, the berries were fully ripe, and it had just snowed about 8 inches.  I have never seen so many bears (this was in WA so they were black bears).  One morning we could see 8 at one time from one sitting position.  We could hear the bears growling and fighting.  We figured they were competing for food since it seemed that winter was on its way.  One of my hunting partners shot a bear (against our advice).  It was getting late and he was by himself so he took the front quarters and hide and left the hind quarters in the snow and was going to return for them in the morning.  None of us thought that anything would take off with bear meat... well something did.  We assume it was another bear because they were acting so aggressive.

Maybe it was an alien since there was no bear tracks in the snow!!

Ya good point... i didnt go down there with him to help (because we told him not to shoot a bear and that we wouldnt help him pack it out) and I cant remember how much snow fell during the night.  He came back and said that a bear drug it off, but I never asked him about the evidence.  I was a little pissed he shot the bear in the first place.  He shot it on opening day of deer season.

Maybe he couldn't "find" it because he didn't want to pack the rest out by himself?

 Just another bit of proof that, when hunting for deer or elk in Griz or brownie country, either use a bow, or have a partner to watch your back while you dress it out for the long haul.

In BC, there are a number of hunters who found out, the hard way, that the rifle shot is a "dinner bell" for the bear.

Bears will definitely eat other bears.

I wasn't there.... He lives in Alaska.... Comes and visits every Christmas..... Seems like a stand up guy.... He has some great stories....
