antler growth already!

I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it with my own eyes. But I just seen a buck with 2" velvet nubs.  :yike:

Idk, I seen this buck dropped his antlers the first week of January. But I would think February is really early for new antler growth  :dunno:

I have seen quite a few bucks with nothing growing up top yet

I think it has some to do with when the rut came and went and the testosterone, Once they get Done rutting (mature bucks) they drop. So if it's a srea with earlier rut then he could drop and then have growth at this time of the year  :dunno:

I know deer are not the smartest during rut but you don't have to call them dumb.  :chuckle:

That is really interesting, would be great if you could keep tabs on him just to see what is going on. We saw a ton of deer last weekend while Coyote hunting south of Ritzville, a lot of bucks still carrying headgear. We did find one really cool fresh 3 point shed. I am thinking about heading back over in a few weeks to look for more yotes  and sheds but with fuel prices  :yike: it may not be justifiable.

I've seen fawn bucks with a little nubbin as early as jan, unless that was his old antlers but I watched them grow all early season.  I still believe the new pushes out the old and you can see them very soon after shedding with good optics and being close enough.  It wouldn't suprise me if you could see something already.  In April the elk are already showing quit a bit, they do have less time to grow them and bigger antlers than deer.

Idk about deer, but Elk start growing as soon as they drop.  I believe its like 4 to 6 inches a day.  I'll be shed hunting and see bulls with both velvet eyeguards standing next to bulls that havent dropped yet, in late April.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

I thought i read somewhere it could be like 2 inches a day, and that was really healthy ones. :dunno:

I think the bucks here decided to just keep working on last year's antlers.  Some of them still haven't dropped yet.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

Yeah Idk, I was curious when i seen it and did a search.  That's what the sources I read said, they could be wrong.
