My Sons '11 WA Muley
«

I bought a hunt last Spring at an SCI banquet that was donated to by Dale Matthews of Iron Mountian Outfitters (Thanks Dale!) and we hunted with Jerrod Gibbons of Okanogan Guide Service.
It was the first time I'd ever bought anything bigger than a print at a banquet, and holy cow my heart was pumping when I won it.. It was beyond a stretch to spent that kind of money, but I knew as soon as I got it, I wanted my 16 year old son to hunt.. He's actually been pretty successful, but he'd only killed one deer with his bow, and it was a spike blacktail.. (He hunted with Larry D Jones and the hunt was on Bowhunter Magazine TV, so small first deer but HUGE trophy! lol) So to get a chance to hunt these big bucks and break his 5 year archery dry spell was a no brainer..
When we got there, Scott Haugan had just left, and he shot a whopper 4x2.. Jim from Western Hunting Extreme was in camp (and killed a big 4x4 the next day) .. My kid was grinning from ear to ear the whole time he was there.. ! Jerrod puts on a beyond stellar hunt, and I can't say enough about how worth it was to make a donation to SCI, and get this kind of reward..!
We sat from an hour before daylight, and we saw deer all day.. There was a HUGE 3x3 that came by us twice during the day that was SO tall, he looked narrow. When I finally realized he was outside his ears by 6 inches or so I realized how massive he was.. Dustin on the other hand had a better view, and I could tell that HE could tell it was huge, because he literally was shaking SO bad that he couldnt draw his bow.. Me and Jerrod were trying not to laugh as we both were taking exxagerated deep slow breaths.. Dustin just couldn't get calm, and the buck ended up hearing me whisper something to him and walked off.. (Sorry bud..!lol)
As it ended up, right at the end of the day I saw a huge 4x4 coming in from the opposite direction that every deer had come from (these are migrating deer out of Canada) . He was on red alert, looking past the blind behind us.. I had Dustins bow resting on my boot, and when I saw it I quietly handed it to him and said to get ready to draw. Just about then I heard deer coming in the snow from behind us, and this buck chased a doe to right in front of us. When he saw the 4x4 he stopped (in the wrong spot for him!) and Dustin drew and pin-wheeled him.. He went about 40 yards and stopped.. Reared over backward and was done..
Obvoiusly a memory for a lifetime for both of us..!

Very cool and congrats to your son. I think I remember that show with your boy. Didn't he miss a deer and then him and Larry practised shooting angles from atop your garage? I have spent a bit of time around both jim and scott at our trade shows. Always fun to talk with them. Thanks for sharing

Yeah, that was him..
... His show was titled " A Whole Lot Of Shakin" and it was very fitting! Larry had said the shot was right at 20 yards, and Dustin had shot that angle a thousand times.. As it turned out, it was almost straight down, or about 7 yards from the base of the tree.. So even holding low his arrow sailed right over the deer.. (Twice). That was Larry's house we shot off of, and it took about 5 minutes to get him dialed.. The next morning he got "Short Spike".. One of the cooler things not on the show is I was on another stand (about 60 miles away) when Dustin got his buck, and I shot a nice fork with eyeguards within minutes of him.. It was a good day!!
Turkey slayer,
I envy your job! Josh met us in town when we got to Omak, and then we hunted with Jerrod personally. And then a few more of the guys when we got back to skin out Dustins deer. I was blown away with the professionalism, but felt like every one of you guys was a friend that I've known for years.. Sure was an awesome trip! We were on a tight time schedule and literally skinned Dustins deer, loaded and bailed to get home to be at work the following day so we didn't get to hang
Jerrod is working with me to make some payments on this years hunt, so its MY turn. 95% chance that I'll be there for the first half the season.. If you are up there I'll get a chance to meet ya!
