Needing new long range scope
« on: February 25, 2012, 06:11:32 PM »
I am shooting a 7mm rem mag and enjoy shooting futher but am struggling with best scope to save for. I figure this is the best place to ask for opinions. I would prefer a turreted styled scope.

I run almost all leupolds now days. The turrests will run you about 60.00 unless you get a deal with a scope that comes with them. I really like the 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 vx3 LR's. I have shot the mark4's but never seen to much gain from my vx3's. They would be my pick and are on almost all my extended range guns

the leupolds a good bet like carp said . but if your going way out a 30mm tube will give you more adjustment .

thanks for the info. I have a friend doing /saying the same. I have had a burning desire for nightforce but have looked at two new ones in a store and both were unclear?
Coachcw - I have been told the 4.5x14 actually has more verticle movement available versus the 6.5x20?

I would prefer about 1400, as I was shooting at 925ish the other day and also about 1100. I figure more available is better than just enough.

Yeah for sure. I buy the 30mm side focus models. I have the 1" ao models as well but like the 30mm side focus much better.

I have shot a lot with a few friends night force scopes and we run them side by side with the leupolds. You can pick up one of the leupolds for about 800 where the night forces avg about 1400.00. There is no way in my mind that there scopes are worth spending that much for. If I thought they were worth it, you can rest assured that I would be running them no matter the price.

if your serious about long range shootn go to best of the west huntn show, from there you will be able to find there long range scopes, they will custom build them for your gun, if you send them the gun they will set it all up for you and work your loads up, you will get a minutes chart and a range chart
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"

Vortex makes a great scope. We just put one on a friends 300wsm and he is shooting 1000 to 1300 yards and love it. We arnt real big on the really big power scope because what we found with shooting, we see a mirage in the scope with the heat off the barrel and such.

I have a Burris fullfield tac30 6.5-20 on my 300 rum. I think that it has great value and when paired with a 20 moa base my calculator shows that I can get to 1200+. It has been very repeatable from 250-850 and back again. That is the farthest I have shot it.

Are you going to hunt with this 7mm or just target practice?

I will be doing both. Basically I enjoy shooting and also coyote bunting So this is going to be my long range coyote gun. I want to take one at a 1000yards some day. Went out and practiced with my AR15 at 4-600 yards and its not ready for 600 but loves 400. I will be practicing soon at 600 and up with the 7mm. Now that coyote derby season is done its time to save money for the 7 scope. Pdog trip coming up!

I like to get smoking deals on used VX3's and I just send them in to Leupold and have M1 knobs installed.
