A lot of guys are not the very best shot, that is just part of hunting, I don't see anything I think is that wrong. I do know these guys and they pass a lot of smaller bucks trying to find good ones.

I can see both sides......I dont think tracking an animal for a half mile is nearly enough before giving up. He shot AND wounded the animal.... he should put in the effort to find it....NOT someone else.....it is great that he had an ethical person with him that was willing to put in the effort to finish the hunt. The fact that they pass on smaller and younger deer is good as it allows the deer a chance to grow bigger for next year.....at the same time he should probly put in a little more time at the range...the animal deserves it.  :twocents:

It may not be that he needs more time at the range, it could just be the excitement of the moment, and maybe even buck fever? Shooting at a live animal is a whole lot different than shooting paper from a bench rest. I know a lot of the shots I've made in the field haven't been nearly as perfect as I'd like them to be, but at least for me I very rarely get an opportunity in which I can take all the time in the world and get a perfect rest. So I'm not going to make a judgement on someone just from a couple of videos.

They hunted with me several years ago and he was older then. I think he probably got tired, that happens. The boys covered for him and they killed the deer, that's what counts.

Just watched both videos, I will admit that a half mile isn't enough, but dad had the boy(s) with him to do the extended tracking, so they got it done.  Didn't hear him say anything about going after a different deer.  Perhaps dad needs to spend a bit more time at the range.

Not impressed with someone who was willing to give up after trailing wounded game 1/2 mile.

Anybody know what state this was in?

If it's Utah, then they are probably safe from being prosecuted for admitting to using radios in the aid of taking game.  I believe it's legal there.

But they won't be able to enter that animal into the Boone and Crockett record books.  They have fair chase rules against that.

sounds like he needs to use a different bullet or caliber cause he hit it good but just looks like the bullet expanded before it did the real damage
