Black powder pistol question.
« on: February 26, 2012, 12:00:39 PM »
My father recently passed and I was planning on shooting one of his black powder pistols. The type he built from a kit many years ago. For the life of me I can't remember the powder charge, I will be shooting a Hornady  #6040 .440 ball and patch with Goex FFFg Black Powder, glad I purchased a large amount of black powder years ago due to the fact I don't believe it's available anymore?

I'm just looking for a basic charge from some of you in the know how, I am also looking for current powders that would be compatable  and the charge for the above mentioned ball, the actual Hornady box for the ball doesn't give a weight in grains on the box. It is only printed with 100 #6040 .440 Lead Ball.

In an old Lyman reloading handbook I have I found a suggested load for a NAVY KENTUCKY PISTOL  44 cal.   .424 round ball,  use .013 patch, 40.0 grs. FFFG black powder, no. 11 caps for percussion pistols.  For flint pistols, fill the pan with FFFFG or FFFG black powder.

Hope this helps, be careful.
