Benelli Nova

I saw one at a gun shop a about 2 months ago and fell in love with it.  Yesterday at the Gun Show I found one with all the tags and accessories but "used" for $299.  It even still has the plastic name plate clipped to the barrel.  I  brought it home with me.  A couple of questions though.  I have never had a Shot gun that was threaded for choke tubes.  What types of choke tube lube do you guys use to keep them from getting stuck?  And what chokes do I need to get for it?  It came with Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder chokes.  Lastly how tight do you go when switching tubes?

I usually use anti seize and frequently take it out to prevent it from getting to stuck. as far as other chokes go it really depends on what your using it for. a lot of guys just run what the gun came with which is what I did for a few years. modified is a great all around choke to have in . I usually get the choke fairly tight. Don't want that thing coming out. but just make sure you are able to get it free after a couple outings. Because they will get stuck. hope this answered a few for.ya

Congrats on your shotgun purchase! Birchwood casy makes a choke tube lube which is probably the best. I use Shooters Choice All purpose grease. It is red in color and comes in a 10cc syringe. As far as tightness, snug is fine, and if you ever notice it backing out just snug it up using a dime or a quarter. VERY important to put a grease on those choke threads! Keep the mod choke in for shooting steel. Have fun!

congrats on the gun, same gun I haves hot for the past 3 years. I am a cheap bastich so I usually use wd40 not the most ideal but i am obsessive and clean my gun every time i use it and take the choke out and clean it every time. As for the chokes, the factory chokes are not bad at all, i did buy an aftermarket full choke from carlsons and i love it and cant beat there customer service.

Those three tubes should cover just about everything.  Some turkey hunters use extra-full chokes but your full should work well enough with the right load and being close enough.

Thanks for the input.  I am excited to get it to the range and try it out.  Hopefully this next fall and winter I will get to try my hand at Pheasants, ducks and geese.

Congrats on the Nova. They are beasts. I love the heck out of mine. I've watched mossbergs and remingtons stop working side by side in the same conditions while my nova just kept slinging wads.

Same here.  Sometimes they can be a little tough, but they always come out.  I'd twist the barrel in half before I let the choke win the battle.

I have a nova that I don't always treat too nice. For the chokes I.don't lube and only tighten as tight as my finger can get it. I only use the wrench for.removal. never had a stuck choke. I hunt late season pheasants in crappy weather

i have the same gun and bought a couple extra tubes from carlsons and they gave me the TC breach plug lube to use and it works great i use it every time i switch tubes . just a good firm hand tight works for me.

You can use grease as some have mentioned, but it will hold moisture and still rust your choke.  Unfortunately I know quite a few guys with stuck chokes in there Novas.  Many will never be coming out without a gun smith or replacing the barrel.
I switched to Nikal made by Jet Lube.  It is a pure nickel extreme service anti-seize lubricant.  This is the best stuff I have used.  My buddies all use it as well.  Great stuff.
When you insert the chokes, pull them up until they are just past snug.  If you crank down on a choke you will stretch the threads and may form a permanent bond with the barrel galling the heck out of the threads.  Many choke manufactures make chokes for the Nova as it is a popular waterfowling gun.  I would start with shooting the modified choke.  Until the marketing geniuses of the world started pushing chokes many folks used what they had and killed many birds.  If you have extra money in your pocket I am sure the shooting industry would appreciate you buying chokes.

If you ever decide you need an aftermarket choke get one that is extended and knurled so you can tighten my hand. My girlfriend and my buddy in MN both use Novas and you only need a little grease and not too tight with the chokes. Extended is nice because you make it hand tight and just check it periodically through the day. You can do this with regular chokes too but you have to stick you finger in the barrel.
