Feedback on browing A bolt stalker
« on: March 01, 2012, 04:30:18 AM »
It will be a yote to deer gun. Mainly for new hunters and clients to use. I am sure it will end up being a 7mm-08. I really love the tikka's we have and that is my choice right now. However I did take a look at the A bolt stalker the other day and it seemed pretty decent. The weight is almost the same as the tikka as well. So I was wondering who all has one and has shot one. I have not messed with the a bolts. I have shot the x bolt series and liked them. So I figured I would hear some feedback about the A bolt if anyone has some to share. Price for me is only about 30.00 difference so that is not a factor.

I have one in 325wsm, and I love it.  Great shooting gun, and very light for a magnum caliber.  I think the wsm's in that gun come in at 6 1/2 pounds, which will get your attention when I shoot the 220gr pills through mine.  My hunting buddy, Silent Bob, has the same gun in the 300wsm as well and they both shoot plenty good.  Seems like a plenty sturdy gun, good trigger feel on mine.  I've shot my cousing A-bolt stainless stalked in 338win, and it shoots plenty well also.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Why A versus X bolt?

I have one, solid rifle, personally the trigger on mine is a little on the heavy side, detachable magaine is nice although not the easiest one to slap in there real fast.

I have had 2 a-bolts. Loved them both. Just got rid of the last one....got the itch to try something new.

Son and I have a couple A bolt's in .325 WSM.  He also has one in .300 Win Mag.  Nice guns in my opinion and shoot well.   It's probably just me, but the new X bolt's stock in hand feels kinda like a baseball bat, which I don't like.

Carp I'm gonna use your luepold statment . Tikkas just plain shoot well and I have not seen one that dosn't . I think a tikka in .270 would be tough to beat for a back up gun ! why mess around ?

And if you get a Tikka in .270WSM it is even better.
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.

I have one, solid rifle, personally the trigger on mine is a little on the heavy side, detachable magaine is nice although not the easiest one to slap in there real fast.

The trigger issue is an easy and cheap fix, with a Timney trigger spring that costs about $20 and 5 minutes of your time to install it. If you know how to use a screwdriver you can do it yourself. My A bolt trigger is 2 1/2 lbs, before I swapped springs it felt like at least 5 lbs, although I can't say for sure because I never checked it with a scale.

Mine's a 270, non stainless, no rust problems but then I don't let it sit overnight without oiling it after a day of hunting in the rain. I don't think I've found a load that it won't group well.

I had an Abolt stalker in .30-06, killed  a few things with it, including a coyote at 7 paces. good rifle, good trigger, good accuracy. Friend of mine still kills deer with it every year in Georgia..

I love my 300 win mag in the a-bolt. In fact I like it so much I just picked up a 338 win mag the other day. The stalker is one of those guns you pick up and can tell right away that it fits you. Tikka isn't that way for me.

Ask your neighbors how they like the A-Bolt Stalkers! They converted me to the A bolt from my WBY. Now wife shoots one too, in 7mm-08. She and I each harvested our bucks with her rifle last year. Great shooting rifles and a joy to hunt with!

If I was looking for a rifle Browning is what I would buy.  They feel way better than the tikka to me.

Thanks I'll look into that. Mine breaks at about 4.5 pounds, not terrible, but not very good either. I have the stainless model, Im going to try some different loads for it this year as I'm not very satisfied with how it groups with feeral premium nosler accubonds.
