270 WSM... Elk Gun?
« on: March 02, 2012, 09:02:29 AM »
I recently won a Tikka T3 270 WSM at the RMEF Banquet last week.  After some research I decided to use this as my hi-country deer gun and loaded it with a Nikon Monarch 4x16x42 BDC for the long range shot.  I have been using a 30-06 as my only elk/deer hunting gun for years now, and am torn whether I should be taking this long range shooter out for Elk Hunting on days where we are hunting a canyon, or can expect a 300-600 yard shot.  Everyone says to get a .300 Win Mag, but hey, this gun was free, so I just want to know if anyone has had success shooting Elk long distance with a 270 WSM or similar?  Thanks for you replies.

Guy Eastman killed a nice bull with a 270wsm on this past week's show. He took 2 shots but it looked like both were good shots.
Not that that means it's a do-all end-all elk gun but it's all about shot placement. Use it and put your bullets in the boiler room and you'll be fine.

Shot placement and bullet selection mean far more than caliber.  If you can shoot it well, it's a fine caliber.

I used my .270 on my bull this year one shot, one kill.  Call and stalk to within rock throwing distance and you shouldn't have a problem.

I've heard 270s can even kill just a bit further than rock throwing distance, but that works too. :chuckle:

I was planning on using either the Federal Barnes TSX 130 grain, or the Federal Nosler Partition 150 grain.  I appreciate everyones feedback.

I was going to say the same thing. He killed him from 350 yards too. The second shot rocked him. In the 70's, the 270 was considered to be an elk rifle.

Ask Jack O'Connor what a 270 will kill... I am sure he can list enough animals to make you feel alright about using it as an elk gun.

NOW unlike Jack.. the fact that your's is a WSM.. means it just has a bit more umph.. so feel confident in what ever you do with it.. I would.

I have the 300 WSM like 400 Out and between the two, 270 and 300 WSM, I feel the 300 is better basically because there is a tad more bullet selection being a 30 cal and those bullets.. almost all of them have a better BC.. meaning better for distance. But that is a whole other thread :)

Its plenty enough gun for what you want to do with it.  That gun will kill anything that your 30 06 will.

I have more...
I can't say for sure they're all killed with his .270 I guess...

It's .031" in difference..125" is an eighth of an inch. If you stacked the difference between the two in dollar bills, you would have about $4.00....don't listen to the internet marksmen who shoot at one elk every ten years and lose down their leg in the process which screws up the shot......so next time they bring a bigger gun to solve the issue. There is no issue. It is plenty of gun.
