Thanks for all of the posts!  The 270 WSM will now be my long range Elk shooter.

.270 WSM will not drop an elk. For that you need a minimum .338 Remington Ultra Mag and must hand load $4.00+/bullets :chuckle:

Elk are only bullet proof on the internet.

In real life,a .270WSM will kill any bull that walks the face of the earth.

Would it be my first choice for an elk round?   No.

Would I hunt elk with it with out worrying about whether it was powerful enough?   Yes.

Am I extremely jealous that you won it in a Tikka?    Absolutely!

All else being equal, I'd take something along the lines of a 300 WSM if I were picking, but I'd sure love to win what you just won.

As others have already said, a quality bullet built for elk sized game will put meat right in your freezer if you do your part.

Congrats on the win!

Boy, if I had a .270 WSM I would cook me up a hand load using a 160 PT just in case a nasty grizzly tried to take my dead moose away from me. I,m sure the WSM would make a 160 sizzle.  :twocents:

I have seen several elk, deer, and bear taken with a 270 wsm. I would recommend premium grade bullets.

I almost shot my bull this last season with a .270 WSM but the .450 Ultra Magnum won the mental debate at the truck, just before the big game. I would have taken the same shot with the .270 WSM as I did with the .450.

I always get a chuckle out of these threads!  Of course a .270 is plenty of gun for anything in North America!  Since someone pointed out that the .270 was Jack O'Connor's favorite caliber I would also like to point out that Eleanor O'Connor (Jacks wife) would always poke fun at her husband and the great big guns that he would bring on a safari.  She killed every species he did on the dark continent with her .257 and a 30-06 including an elephant!  Yes an 06' took down an elephant but some think that it isn't enough gun for elk! :chuckle:
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

Elk doesn't know better. Just like a dead insurgent doesn't talk any less when a 5.56 hits them vs. a 7.62

Yes it will. 140 Accubond from a 270win will do the same. I killed my cow elk this year accross a canyon, one shot from the 270win, she was down instantly, bang flop. Firefighter4607 killed his 7x7 342'' bull in 2006 with his 270wsm, worked great for him! Congrats on winning a fine rifle/cartridge!

I've taken 10 elk all with either a .270 win or a 25-06, about half of 'em with plain jane cup & core bullets at distances up to 375 yards. only 1 took more than 1 shot and he was the closest & those extra shots were for my sense of security, not really needed but as I tell my kids, if he's still standing, shoot again! otherwise he may run into the nastiest, deepest, darkest, canyon & we'll have to pack him out when if you just put another alongside the 1st hopefully he'll drop, roll over & land on the road! just kidding about that last remark but truthfully a .270 WSM with quality bullets will be a fine elk rig. awesome win!

:) the real trick is this, put a piece of tape over the caliber marking on yer gun, the elk won't know what gun you used, so anything you shoot well will kill them!!!!  geeeez you guys make this way to complicated. its all about the numbers some magazine publishes, experience means  nothing!!!!
