Bone, the Drake Spoony is one of the most beautiful birds out there.  I think they rate right up there with a Wood Duck and Harliquin.  Late season plummed out spoony, doesn't get much better than that.......John

Whats funny is that when I lived in Nevada we would pass on these all day long unless hunting was slow.

most taxidermists use cast heads so a shot up bill isn't a problem at all.

Used to shoot them fairly regularly.  Then I learned to mount my own birds and haven't gotten a decent one since.  Prolly the hardest bird to get in full color in my opinion.

Hunt Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge and you will shoot some!

This was the best smiling mallard I shot this season.  Unfortunately not a good enough one to mount.  I used to just pick out the mature drakes in January when they went by, but just don't see to many in the spots I hunt anymore.

Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Its too bad it takes them so long to get colored up. We shot a ton of those bootlips in november, but none of the drakes were any good.

I've never shot one.

Shoot me a pm during the season, I have a super secret spot.

Hey bone, that was a great pic of all those drakes. I swung by my duck spot and found a ton. I only saw two drakes all season. One was on the adjacent private and the other swung into my dekes and died. Here is just a brief video as I drove by. Nothing spectacular, but I am still in awe of this species, at least the drakes. I hope the link works.
