That is a cool and rare find.  I believe that would count as natural winterkill here and yes you could keep it.  I am not sure when that photo was taken but If it was recent I sure would like to find a spot with that little snow.

Of course you can't know for sure, but it looks like that bull wasn't crushed to death. Look at the space between the log and the ground. That bull could have lied there for days until it starved to death.  :dunno:

WOW VERY COOL FIND. Looks like a heck of a good bull as well. Better a elk under there then a person. I have had trees come down why I was in the woods. Not very fun!

Don't get caught with a winter kill skull here in Wa, can't keep them.  You will get fined for it and it taken away.  Amazing pic to the op, first time I've seen it also.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

If a tree falls in the woods and noone is there to hear it....

I think about this everytime I am in the woods. I heard one fall a few yrs ago while conversing with a Tom Turkey on a windy day. Tree fell and he became silent, don't know if it hit him or just scared him off??????

Anyway, when I nap in the woods on a windy day, I make sure I am protected (just in case)

Pretty unbelievable. I guess I thought elk were a little quicker than that. I've seen plenty of trees fall and I would have though wild animals such as elk could out manuever them.

If a person found something like that can you keep it or is it illegal.

Not necessarily true. It's not roadklill. If you call your local WDFW LEO, he may let you take the head.
