a 10 gauge single shot would be worse. The pumps and semis are so heavy there is no kick.

Pretty much any reliable 12 gauge semi auto is the way to go. As long as it fits her well

I got my GF a Winchester 101 in a 20 gauge 26 inch barrels improved cylinder/modified(which is all I use).
I would also make sure IMO that it is a breaking gun for safety reasons be it a single shot, O/U or SxS.
