NEWS RELEASE
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
March 7, 2012
Contact:  WDFW Wildlife Program, (360) 902-2515

Fish and wildlife enthusiasts invited to share photos

OLYMPIA – Washingtonians have a new way to share their outdoor adventures with others who enjoy hunting, fishing and observing the natural world.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is now accepting photos for a new online gallery of images submitted by people enjoying the great outdoors.

“This is a great way for outdoor enthusiasts to share their fishing, hunting and wildlife-watching experiences with others,” said Nate Pamplin, WDFW’s wildlife program director.  “We know Washingtonians have some great outdoor photos to share.”

Key subjects for the online gallery include hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing, as well as scenic photos of WDFW wildlife areas. Photos selected for display in the gallery may also be used in other electronic and print publications produced by the department.

Guidelines for photo submissions are included on the department’s new photo webpage at http://wdfw.wa.gov/sharephotos/.  Viewers can find the gallery of photos posted to date at http://wdfw.wa.gov/gallery/index.php/user-submitted-photos.`

Pamplin said he would like to use one of those photos for the cover of the department’s 2012 Big Game Hunting Pamphlet.

This year’s theme is youth hunting,” he said. “We’re hoping to use a photo submitted to our photo gallery of a young hunter with their first deer or elk from the 2010 or 2011 hunting season.”

To be considered for the pamphlet cover, photos must be submitted to WDFW by April 6, Pamplin said.

If WA doesn't pay for professional images the pamphlet will continue to not be as good as other states such as Montana's, etc.  The pamphlet is a way to promote the state's wildlife and sell licenses, etc. not unlike a Victoria Secret ad.  This is a somewhat limited continuation by WDFW to not promote our wildlife and sell or treat it like a business.  This is not unlike the "photo contests" where one person might win a prize but they now own the image to use in any way they want and for free.  The thinking is, anytime you want free images, you just hold a photo contest...  Sorry to be a negative nelly, but this is just my opinion and another way to look at it.  I do see the potential "get your name out there" benefits but what is that really worth in the end and does it really accomplish that...?  This is not a comment on past submitters to the pamphlet as there are more than a few photographers who have submitted that I genuinely respect.

How about paying $750 for a live 180" Swakane california ram that is walking around out there and tell out of state hunters you can have a chance at a ram like this?  Sell one more license and it's worth it...

*mods, go ahead and pull this if it's not in the right thread/section or not appropriate.

A youth from Idaho posing with their wolf kill in Idaho might be the right approach for them to take.  Given the wolf plan we might be headed down that path.  I know this is snarky but I am bit disappointed with our wildlife leadership at the moment.

I'm disappointed obviously.  Why pay for something when you can get it for free.    I submitted my images and never heard back.  I guess this is why.   Bad news is there goes photos for you guys next year as it will be hard to justify looking for a cover shot if there is no cover shot....... :(

Famous last words......

By submitting your photo(s) to WDFW, you grant WDFW a royalty-free license to publicly display, reproduce, and use the photographs in any form or media for any and all editorial and related promotional purposes in perpetuity.
