well it's not much of a story. it started out before daylight, going to an area that i have never hunted before. my buddy hunts and scouts the area for elk in early archery. he told me that he always sees a lot of bear sign in there in mid august, but never has seen a bear. (south facing hillside with lots of berries). So i figured that it would be a good spot to glass and spot one. Boy was I wrong. At daylight we walked up through the berry patch to the timber and hit a trail that basically stayed in the timber the whole time. I told my buddy that i really didn't feel like pounding the timber to hunt bear when there was some good berry patches around, so we turned around and headed for the truck. to try to find some decent berries, as the one just walked through was thick and not very big.
On the way back down, through the same berry patch that we walked up, I heard the brush breaking about 20 yards to my right. I stopped, but my buddy kept walking. then the bear woofed at me. I knew immediately that it was a bear. I actually had to yell at my buddy to stop because at this time he was about 15-20 yards ahead of me.
the bear ended up running out of the draw 350 yards below us (we ranged it). I shot free handed and hit him 2 out of 3. I honestly think i could line that shot up 100 times and probably only hit it once. that bear was smoking when he came out of that draw.
it took us about 4 hours to get him back to the pickup. we packed him out whole on a pole and the picture was taken back at home about 2hrs drive from where i shot him
