Antler Mount Covers
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:21:19 PM »
Does anyone know where to find a cool skull cap cover when the antlers are mounted to a plaque? I have seen the normal black or brown plastic or velvet covers but is there anything different out there that i can order? Let me know if you guys have any ideas.

Thanks

i have done many with deer leather. Screw the skull plate to a piece of wood,  cover the skull plate and wood with 1/4' sponge foam, cover with the tanned leather, staple on bottom then srew to the plaque. You determine how you want it to look.

How did you do that? Same as NWBREW mentioned above?

I paid the taxi to do it. They are friends of mine. I figure his instructions are pretty close how it was done. And the leather braiding was probably glued on, the brads I think are decorative.

I've used camo fabric for a bunch of my antler mounts.  The don't look nearly as good as the leather ones shown here, but it is something different and very inexpensive.  I found some camo fabric at Walmart and used like 1/2" thick quilt batting under the fabric.  Used hot glue to attach the batting and fabric to the back of the skull.  Just another idea for you.

I use the foam forms they sell at taxidermy supply stores, cut the skull cap to fit and fill with paper mache, then sand smooth. You can get all sorts of leather from the taxidermy supply stores as well, I normally stick with the buckskin color. These mounts are simply and can be done in about half a day including dry time for the quick set mache, probably about a half hour in labor for one including plaque making.
