sorry for the late reply.  Have been away for a few days. 

I would recommend 8x42 for general birding use. It has wider FOV and more stable image when holding the binoculars in your hands.

I ordered the 10x42's !  Can't wait to get them.  I'll be looking forward to using these while Mulie/Elk hunting over on the east side (Oregon) this year, and on the west side of WA. as well.
