list of favorite Hikes

  OK, I have been an avid backpacker for many years, and want to start a topic that lists hunters, and fisherman's  favorite hiking trails, were fishing may be good or were theres wildlife, or great  views, my definition of a good hike is one that isn't crowded and theres something to do like fish, hunt , berrypicking, or scouting. Some of my all time favorites are Spectacle  lake ,and  Waptus.

Good topic. I was going to start one on backpacking. Anyways my favorite hike to date is up Mt. Pilchuck. The views on top are amazing. Its a bit crowded on weekends but I like to go up real early to avoid people and its 30 minutes from my house. Also there are opportunities up there for off trail destinations that most don't know about. I'm planing on an overnight up there this year. It's absolutely beautiful up there. Dangerous too at some places which keep the dayhikers away.

I'm headed to the Enchantments this year and have never been so I can't wait.

A new one I did this year was in the 7 devils range was the North trail... awesome views and lots of elk. There are several more I wanna do in that range now..

I asked about a good place to ride my mt. bike in to camp a while ago, and someone suggested the suiattle river. I was just wonderin if anyone has been there before. It sounds like alot of fun, but it would be nice to get some info on the place, and maybe some pics. I would like to hear of any other places that anyone might know of too.

You will love the Enchantments!!!    make sure to summit little Anaperna while you are up there.Did you get the golden tickets???

Thorton Lake!  It is a amazing hike up in the cascades.  Very hard, but worth every minute.

Hester Lake isn't bad, not crowded at all & good fishing, plus Goldmyer Hotspring is close by so sometimes I'll head down the other way for a dip.  Lake Snoqualmie isn't bad either or Granite Lakes.

What is up with the enchantments do you have to have a apply for special permit to hike up there before a certain date or something I have never been up there but wouldn't mind going up

They have a quota system for camping in the enchantment zones from some date in June to some time in October, they draw for I think 75% of the permits. They do have a daily drawing at the Ranger Station in Leavenworth for remaining permits. The drawing was about a month ago so now if you want to camp you have to try your luck in the draw day off. You can day hike all you want by just going to the trailhead though.

High Divide, Olympic Mountains. Do it at the end of Aug. You cant count the #get of bear. Dont worry, they are in the berry fields. Best hike of my life.

The hike to American falls north of Priest Lake is one of my favorite hikes.  I also like the hike to Hunt Lake and then down into Fault Lake.

Blanca Lake is a good one and the climbers route around the western edge to the glacier between Keyes and Columbia Peaks is awesome.

If you go to the Enchantments make sure to hit Druid Fields - pretty cool spot.

Prince Creek to Stehekan along Lake Chelan! A lot of bear, good fishing, great scenary and Stehekan is a grand place!

  If this winter keeps up we might not get to hike in the wilderness this summer, we have over 20 inches of snow on the ground and winter just started, I am doing a 50 mile hike this summer in August so while things slow down will be getting all the meals packaged up and lighting up on our gear, heres hoping for a good snowpack but just be gone by August .

  I put hikes into 2 categories, quality meaning was it crowded, during summer months weekends see a lots of use on some trails, weekdays are the best for some trails, catching a few fish sure makes it a good experience and theres nothing like fresh trout when backpacking, Some hiking trails are open to motorcycles in the national forest not badmouthing cycle riders but do your homework and don't make that mistake, I learned that lesson going into Manastash lake one year, now I stay in the wilderness, Last year I spent 4 days at a lake 11 miles in, never saw a sole other than our bunch the whole time, caught fish and ate like kings on the open fire, that's quality and a place were a person can unwind and recharge. Timing is everything also when doing an extended hike over 4 or 5 days weather plays a big part, sometimes it turns into a survival situation, one year I did the Lake Ozette hike at the ocean, 4 days of steady rain and sea mist, 12 miles of slippery kelp covered rocks and smelling like a septic tank, was wet the whole time, spent a lot of time trying to get a fire going and drying socks. Folks that spend alot of time hiking outdoors usually have one or two favorites, and they dont always want to share there locations, its because there not crowded, or there just a short hike in an area not well known, I know I have mine, most of em are in the wilderness.

when I was a kid we made a annual trip to rattlesnake lake and did the hike to the top of the ridge.  Back then it was a great view, I have not been there in 20 years, I assume its changed since then.

Do you know where Gnome Tarn is?  You would have to really know the area well and many people never go because of short time windows up there.  Trail running through the area has taught me many "side trail" junctions and I have explored those when I have gotten the overnight permit (I put in every year and go to the ranger station a couple times to score those as well).  I don't have a traditional job schedule so I am able to go on "off" days.  Good luck and enjoy the coolest place in the whole state when you can.

I am curious what the distance is of that whole trip? I'm assuming that your'e refering to the Twin Sisters TH on the Chinook side

 I had planed to go from blow out mountain to white pass last year on the PCT, figured it to be around 60 mile trip, but the forest service hadn't done much trail maintenance due to deep snow drifts in places, and lots of blow downs south of chinook  pass, and there was some mighty tricky snow bridges to cross, this was late August, decided to do a 40 mile hike in the ALW we still ran into lots of snow above 5000 feet with a good number of blow downs on that section of the PCT west of fish lake, not a single horse had been through there that year late August, all the snow didn't melt out from last year so I an expecting this year will be close to the same, I'm doing another 50 this summer with my scout troop late summer haven't decided on the route yet, depends on how the snow melts out up high.

The start would be from the trail head at the top of Chinook by Tipsoo lake to White Pass just before the ski resort by Dog lake. I believe it's 26 miles one way.

we did it northbound from white. we were without trail for 1.5 days. it was buried down in the basin so we just sidehilled. it ended up being 28.5 for us on my gps odometer. we went last july 21.
