I didn't apply either But I may pick up a leftover tag if I don't get drawn for anything this year.

I did put in for the special permit with the time frame of the general draw and special permit draw being the same time it does make a difference as opposed to years past. I like it better
I don't like it because I have to draw a tag before I can be my son's sponsor and get him a youth combo at the reduced youth price. This means it's too late for him to put in for the limited entry antlered mule deer permits. If I draw the special permit for antlered mule deer we can't hunt the same unit since you have to hunt in only the unit where you drew the special permit.

I do like that the youth combos are unlimited now.

If people who applied, or at least those who chose not to apply are paying attention, generally speaking Montana's snow pack is running in excess of 100% of average again this year like last year.  It's another late winter shaping up for the 2nd year in a row.

I don't know what part of the state you hunt but in the SE it wasn't the snow that was the problem. Last year it warmed enough to melt the snow but not dry out, then additional cold fronts froze the ground and created a lot of ice that kept the critters from feeding.

The late spring did have a positive effect on the food, the deer and elk in the SE had loads of it.

I spoke with my friends over there this weekend and the temps are warmer than here. Lows have been in the mid 40's and highs this week will be in the 70's, 75 expected for the weekend.

Its been in the 60s most of march with a few days every week hitting 70 and this past saturday it hit 80 here in billings...been hardly any snow over here, gunna be a really dry summer.

I recall several feet of snow falling on the Rocky Mtn Front in June before.  I think it's a little early to panic yet.  Remember last year?

I know that Glacier national park and the Bob Marshall have over 100% snow pack in the mountains.

I should say im only speaking for the central to eastern part of the state. I back packed to 5-5500 feet in the foot hills of the bear tooths 3 weekends ago and there was only traces of snow (check out the backcountry camp thread) Red lodge doesnt have enough snow worth skiiing or snowboarding at the moment and I dont suspect it to change any time soon. Hopefully it does.

Talked to a Montana fish and game employee earlier today and they were undersubscribed again by about 800 tags in the big game combo.

Looks like I'm going to Montana.  I was a little nervous because we didn't buy the $50 perf point.

How do we go about getting one of those big game combo licenses?  I'm not very familiar with Montana.

Hunt - The last 800 will be sold first come first serve.

If you were asking for next year you have to submit your app with the $9XX dollars by march 15th.

Any ideas when the results will be out for the general draw and for the special draw?

Do you need to get on the alternates list somehow?  Or just call them on the day they go on sale?

Cut off a arm and a leg and sell them both. After you do that, collect cans and scrap metal. You should have enough for a combo tag after that. :chuckle:
