Grandpa's Bull Moose

My Grandpa shot this bull moose on a guided hunt northwest of Westlock, British Columbia in September of 1968. He and his guide spotted the bull from 600 yds out. Apparently, that was within my Grandpa's comfort range. He held 2 ft over it's back and squeezed a shot off out of his Sako 7mm Rem. Mag. The bull reared up and then took off into the bush. They trailed it and found him alive lying under a small birch. My Grandpa put a quick end to that with a round to the head. They discovered later that the first shot had hit him in the neck. "Those moose Justin," he told me "they're kind of uhhh . . . a chicken outfit!" Not the image I have of this massive animal, but to each their own. The bull measured 57 1/2" at it's greatest width and my Grandpa was really impressed with the symmetry of the rack.

The rack hung above his garage for a number of years and was eventually blown off by the wind. The skull cap split in two and he found no value in the rack anymore, so he took it to the dump. A lady there told him that he could dump for free if she could have the antlers. He took her up on the deal and thought nothing of it. Later that year, a taxidermist asked my Grandpa what he had done with the antlers. My Grandpa told him the story to which he replied; "That rack was worth at least $750!" Spendy trip to the dump.

Me too!  Every time I dig out the old Grandpa pics I think to myself, "Damn, those guys were one hell of a lot tougher than I ever was."  And, if I ever told the wife to stick around camp all day long and make sure supper was ready when I got back...I'd be just as dead too!

I have a good number of the old Fred Bear posters that leave me in awe.  They sure knew how to use what God gave 'em back then.  I can not imagine hiking as much as they did in those boots - Ouch!

Just yesterday I was thinking I needed to get a new flat bed scanner for all my grandfathers old hunting pics.  If I ever find a good one we will have to start a "favorite grandpa pics" thread.

Thanks for the story and picture. I think it is great to remeber our heritage. I have a small set of moose antlers in the dining room from 1963 that my grandfather harvested, still has the original metal BC moose/elk tag attached.

Very cool.  I was just discuing mountain lion hunting with my classes yesterday and telling them about some of the tough old birds I knew when I was a kid...

That's a real car!  Like the photos of the western 8 arrow quivers.  First time I brought a nine arrow quiver to the range I was stylin'.  Those six arrow guys had nothin on me
