need help hunting
« on: July 29, 2008, 01:34:04 PM »
I remember hunting with my dad when I was a little girl it was fun and exciting.  Ever since he passed away I have this urge to go hunting again. Can anyone tell me how I can get my hunting permit? What type of gun should I get and where should I go to hunt? When I was little we'd hunt Deer, elk, goose, pheasant, and quails.  I would like to shoot those buggers again so any help would be nice.

thanks,
Sarah

Awesome! We need more ladies in the sport!

You should probably start by getting in a hunters education class. These classes are held all over the state. Go to the Washington Department of Wildlife website and spend some time becoming familiar with it. Licensing, education, etc...  Hang out on this site and just check out what folks are talking about. I am sure someone would be willing to give you advice and tips after you specify what you want to do. Welcome. Maybe you can go tothe introductions thread and tell us all a bit about yourself!

Welcome again!

Where are you located?  What age group?
This will be my wife's first year actually hunting other than grouse and she is looking for other women to share the experiences with.  I have been hunting for about 30 years so can help in the teaching department.
As Ice said, get the class under your belt and use us here on the site for information.

Welcome!  Nice to see another woman on here.  Maybe my wife will join someday!

well assuming you were born after 1972 and you dont have a hunter safety card yet you would need to enroll in hunter safety class first(contact wdfw to find out class schedules) or you can get a one year exemption through the mentor program but you would always be required to hunt with a partner who has had their license at least 5 years. As far as guns are concerned id go get an 870 express, they have a smaller framed ladies/youth model but it only comes in 20 gauge as far as i know so if you want a 12 gauge and cannot handle the longer framed model you may have to get one and cut the stock down, that would cover any birds youll want to shoot in a relatively inexpensive package(around $300) that will shoot forever. as far as big game is concerned once again for a smaller framed gun you can go with the remington model 7 it comes in .243, 7mm-08, and .308 if you wanna hunt elk id avoid the .243, once again if you can handle the full length guns you could go with just about any rifle out there. Hope you get to hunt this year and good luck to ya.

Welcome back to hunting, I'm sure that are a lot of people on here that will help you out.
As for a rifle like was said before it depends on what you can handle. Something in the 308 family would be great for you, They dont have much kick but you can hunt most big game with it.

Dont be afraid to ask questions.

This is a pretty cool site for women.  Washington department of Fish and Wildlife works with it and my be a sponsering member--but I don't know for sure.

Good Luck.

What part of the state do you live in?  This will be my wife's first second year deer hunting and she got a nice 4pt whitetail last year. She is loves it know, she never could understand why I was so addicted until she got into it. Wish I had her pic on this computer with it. She used my truck, there was 5" of fresh snow, her and her hunting partner wanted to go by themselves. They shot the buck 20 min. before dark, took 10 minutes to drag back to the truck, and an hour to lift it into the back (2500 dodge diesel, 35" tires) :chuckle:. Anyway the reason that I say this is you will like it, you have good memories of it from the past and they will only get better. If you are on the eastside of the state contact me and I could help you get started in terms of location. I would recommend a 243 for a rifle. Great for deer, if you want a more diverse gun get a necked up 243, otherwords a 308. That would be good for elk, deer and bear, just a little more kick... Good luck :hello:
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Puget Sound stated gave you the site to investigate.  I highly recomend it.  As for big game this state has it all.  There are some great books for big game that we can also provide.    Start asking questions...

My and son use a 270 long rifle.  That gun has more broad range for the different type of hunter then any other gun on the market (in my opinion).  My son shot it and I used a light bullet and load.  It was a very easy shooting gun.  I then moved the grain of the bullet up in weight as he got older.

You would need to shoot some before you buy your gun.  Most on this site can help you out with that.
