I also like the idea of no felt.  Different.

The thing to remember with Felt and No Felt is that the hangers placed on the back of the rug are designed to hold the weight of the Rug on the wall.  BUT, there are still going to be some spots that are going to want to sag away from the wall.

Thats where thumb tacs are used.  You will only need about a dozen or so.  What you do is place them behind the top layer of felt through the bottom layer and into the wall.  The top layer will hide the thumb tacks.

With no felt you have nothing to hide them.

I was thinking of over a couch or something like that(I like leather).   Its just a different idea.  I'd probably hybridize it and do something with felt over the wood on the head mount.

Yeah the no felt woould work great if your just going to drape it over the back of the couch or lay it on the floor but if you ever wanted to hang it up on the wall later. . . .

Are you talking about putting felt on the back of a shoulder mount bear to cover up the wood on the back?

I like it better without the felt, it looks more natural.  When I get a bear to do a rug out of I wanted to do it without the felt but didn't know it could be done.  I think the felt is unatural looking.  Thanks for the pictures and idea!

Awesome, what a great looking bear!

Is there any negative side effect of not having the felt done on the rug?  I kind of don't like the felt, as it's often distracting, visually (in my opinion).  This is the first one i've seen done without felt, and i think it looks great.  But I wonder if it wears faster, or something without the felt.
Thanks

Hey ORBowHunter,

The only real draw back I can see by doing a rug with no felt is hanging it on the wall.

All my rugs come with 5 hangers.  One in the head and one in each foot.  They are there for weight support.  Between the front and back leg along the side of the belly the rug will tend to sag away from the wall.  This is were the felt comes in handy.  If you pull the top layer of felt away from the bottom you can use several thumb tacks through the back layer of felt into the wall.  Than lay the top layer back against the botto and it covers the tacks.

With no felt you can't hide the thumb tacks.  You could use some finnish or brad nails but than your putting holes in the backing of your bear which could cause runs in the fabric.

Beautiful work as always Mich.     I kind of dig the no-felt look too...
