That's why I bow hunt! Too many times I'm out there seeing small game and not wanting to risk a shot. Though my dad once shot a grouse with his 30-06 and I walked off while he was cleaning it and such and maybe 150-200 yards away I walked onto a bedded buck. Sometimes I think they just like playing possum
Make every shot count cause ya might not get another.

:yeah:  I see tons of bear but have never had the desire to shoot one.  I am too focused on deer hunting to even think twice about it.

While scouting for deer a day before modern we watched one hell of a bear from 300+ yards, I even had a tag, but decided to scout light and only carry my sidearm (357 w/ 6" barrel).  Needless to say we 'attempted'...got within 50 yards turned to tell my BIL that it was just on the other side of this bush...turned and he was gone!  Probably a blessing in disguise...not sure if I'd like to be within 50 yards of that mother after shooting it!  Granted my BIL killed a 1000 pound Hungarian red boar with the same pistol!

Let me know where these pesky bears are and I will help get them outta your deer area.

I think it depends on the area. Up high, I think animals are more aware of sounds like a .22 shot, etc, therefore I more than likely would pass on a grouse. I say this, as I have watched monster elk up by the nooksak not give a rats arse about target shooting just over the hill from them. Didnt flinch or care at all.
However.....roasted grouse is mighty tasty.

I think that deer will begin changing their patterns in august when they hear shots from bear hunters.  I wouldnt encourage anyone to shoot bears where I plan on deer hunting.   :sry:  Some day (when im rich  :chuckle:) I will return to these places with horses and shoot one of each color... but until then I am not a bear hunter unless it is with a camera.  They dont taste good enough for me to target them, plus it wouldnt even be a challenge.   :twocents:

I bow hunt.  One time on way back to camp at end of day came upon handful grouse at about 10 yards.  Nocked an arrow, drew and shot.  Clean miss.  Stirred them up a little, but one was still visible.  This time took the head off.  Went up to retrieve arrows and bird.  Picked up my arrow and bird and just 3 feet way was one of the other grouse.  Took the arrow I picked up and skewered it.  Was feeling proud of myself for getting 2 birds.  Then went to pick up other arrow, and another bird was pinned under the arrow.  Grabbed that one by the head and quickly dispatched it.  Wonder if that counts as 3 birds with 2 arrows.
