Trophy Ridge Revolution Arrow rest: a mini review
« on: March 25, 2012, 05:44:19 PM »

Initial Impression:  Weird looking.  Like a couple of claws.  I guess that's the point.  Reason I got this is because, with my bum shoulder, I really needed a fall away rest because of the slight tremor I'm prone to when shooting and the possibility I might go to 4 fletches.  But I REALLY love my Hostage containment rest and the ability for it to hold a knocked arrow while all of my fingers are busy holding the bow.  This seemed to be a "best of both worlds" rest.

Installation:  A bit of work since I don't have a bow press.  I used the needle method mentioned in a lot of places around the web and got it mounted just fine.  They claim on the installation instructions that the Revolution comes out of the box tuned to most bows and this was almost the case with my AR-34.  2 minor adjustments, 1 tick up and 1 tick left, and it was right on.

One thing I would suggest is to not use the felt they include in the kit, instead super glue your own strip of mole skin to the claws.  The sticky on the felt is not good and the felt is frail.  It also comes with a pad that sticks onto the shelf to prevent "arrow clank"  1.  I found that my fletches hit the pad.  2.  I found that I didn't even need the pad since the containment claws held the arrow a good 1/2" above the shelf anyway.

Use:  In a word, Flawless.  Functions just like the video showed.  The first couple of arrows I could hear the fletches hitting and I thought "Crap.  This thing doesn't work" until my 10 year old pointed out that they may be hitting the pad as I mentioned earlier.  I removed that and bingo.  No more hitting.  I would like it to hold the arrow just a smidge tighter but, this isn't that important since it holds the arrow well enough.  My best ever 3 arrow field point group at 20 yards was 2.3".  I said WAS.  After about a half an hour tuning session, I was withing 3/4" at 20 yards over and over and over.  Moved back to 30 yards and was still mostly within 3/4 to 1".  Towards the end I was getting tired and the groups went out to 2" but, still heads and tails above anything I ever shot with the Hostage.

This proved to me exactly how much the Hostage was affecting arrow flight.  In the .00234 seconds or whatever, from the time I pulled the release trigger until the arrow cleared the Hostage, I moved just so much to affect the arrow flight.

Overall:  4.75 stars out of 5.  I didn't like the felt and shelf pad they put in with it and will replace those with my own mole skin and will nix the pad all together.  I have to say that this is probably my favorite archery purchase so far.  IMO, the value of this rest far exceeds the $45 NIB I paid for it.  If I stay with a bow and don't switch to a crossbow in the coming years, this rest will be on every bow I ever own, until something better comes along anyway  ;)

Looks cool, but what happens if it get's wet or junk in it.  Also late season, we hunt in snow a lot.  If that thing froze up, it wouldn't be working correctly.  Just factors to look at.  May not be an issue in Sept.  What speed is that release rated up to or will it handle all the high speed bows?

Don't know about the "real world" scenarios.  Gonna just have to wait and see.  Trophy Ridge claims it works with all bows.  I can only attest to my 11 year old AR-34

Great write up. I have the same rest sitting here waiting to go onto my new bear. They have been testing and working on this rest for 2 years now. They have been putting it threw a lot of stuff and it looks to be a real winner

Anybody that's looked closely at these, is it worth the extra money for the micro adjust?

It will probably be affected by snow and freezing rain as much as any drop away maybey less cause it looks like polycarbon synthetic material rather than metal that most drop aways are.  I was wondering if it would help with any twitch I have when shooting I missed a big buck last year with a hostage rest I was settled in fine and though I would connect but missed about 3 inches under him I asks on here and the first response seemed golden I was trying to see my arrow right as I shot and the full containment hostage would affect my arrow by about three inches at fourth yards.  I'm getting one of these ASAP !  Thanks for the writer up awesome job!

The holder claws and arms are not metal.  As far as the gear inside that you would have to worry about, I'm not sure.  I didn't tear mine apart.  I have that same twitch and can't get rid of it.  Putting this on has made a huge difference over the Hostage I had

I tried settling in on my target and closing my eyes as I released probably not safe to do often but I was dead on at 65 yards so I knew it was a twitch of some sort caused by me trying to watch my arrow hit its mark.  So now I hold whatever pin on target until the arrow hits it mark I shoot way tighter groups this way.  I can't wait to see how much more this helps.  Thanks again

I have the micro. I have not got my bow setup yet. I will always go with one with the marks. It makes it easy to check the rest and make sure it is still in the right place. Plus if you over adjust its easy to find the postion you moved it from.

I put my gear threw a lot each year. I will do a pre and post season write up on it.

Nice write up. I bought one for my dad for xmas but he hasn't put it on his bow yet. I like you like the two features in one... containment and drop away. For the last 5 or 6 years Ive only had WB rests so another reason Ive wanted to change is one, late season hunting and two, arrow speed. Sounds like its worth it! Not sure if the micro is worth almost double the cost though...

Is the micro the one with the movement measurement lines?  That's the one I have.  Thought that was the regular.  I paid $45 for it from some store online

Yeah I thought the regular one did not have the marks. The regular one is like 45.00 and the micro is like 85.00. Maybe I am wrong would have to look it up, maybe both have the marks.

I think the micro probably has click adjustment screws rather than just loosen and push types.  Cabelas has them on sale right now for 49.99 and free shipping over $49 purchase.
