Drew a Spring Bear Tag in the Sherman Unit
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:05:44 PM »
I drew a spring bear tag in the Sherman unit and have not hunted in that unit before. Have driven through it camping in the summer and looked good up around the pass but I am sure that area will get a lot of pressure. I am assuming that the best area's will be off the beaten path with natural grass openings and a southern exposure. I have spent a lot of time hunting bears on the coast in the general season but this a new gig to me. Anybody have any advice on areas to look at. I would prefer to hike either behind gates or on trails. I don't know if there are any trails in that area without having a designated wilderness. Any input would be great. Thanks

Just under 5 feet of snow at the top of the pass.

I live only a few miles from the unit.  If I were you, I would go into the Nat'l Forest from Lake Ellen then follow Barnaby Creek up onto White Mt and just drive the roads at daylight and dark.  A few years back, I took my cousin from the westside up there driving the roads in the mornings and evenings and we saw 7 bears in 2 days.  The only thing was, they didn't stick around long enough for him to shoot one.  There are plenty of bears there so you should see some.  Other than that, I don't have any suggestions as to any specific place to hike to find them.  I have personally killed 2 bears on White Mt and think that would be the best place to look.  Good luck.

Definitally, you want to wait till May. Still lots of snow and it is hard to get around. If you want an extra set of eyes send me a PM.

There are bear throughout the unit, but I don't think I have ever seen a bear in April here.

Jess,

Can you get into our camp spot yet?  We've got one tag in our group.  We'll be up there in a few weeks to check it out.

The wife and I made a trip up there today and saw one sow blackie. She is the tag holder and is holding out for a good size boar or a color phase. Good luck everyone they are starting to move.
